Spiked Shoes Tutorial

A while ago I saw some awesome shoes on Modcloth (http://productshots2.modcloth.net/productshots/0121/5088/09c1a67e59ebe8c3b8824e70b8129650.jpg?1351633475) but sadly they were out of my price range. I decided to have a go at making them, using cheaper shoes in the same style. The original shoes had cat claw spikes, I used dragon claw spikes off ebay.

I made the strips to mount the spikes onto out of two layers of leather. The suede to match the shoe, and then a thin very stiff leather for some reinforcement. The two leathers are glued together (Leather glue) and stitched along the edges. The under leather is cut slightly smaller so it's edges aren't visible. Marking the placement of the spikes, I punched the holes and screwed in the spikes as tightly as possible. You can probably substitute heavy interfacing for the under reinforcement, I just happened to have a lot of leather scraps.

The final step was to glue the strip onto the shoe. I used barge cement but depending on your style of shoe you may be able to take it to a cobbler to have it stitched on more permanently. These ones I used have a hard plastic heel on the inside, so glue was my easiest option. The barge should last for quite a while, and should be easy enough to touch-up should it start to peel away.
