I finally bit the bullet and ordered some supplies to keep working towards my 1840's outfit and a lot of it arrived today!
I got 70 yards cording (For the petticoat) horsehair for a bonnet, and some lacy mitts (Still on their way to me) The only Thing I didn't buy was linen for the shift. I want to see if I can hit up the garment district sometime before school starts, last time I found some really nice linen in a store there that had a lot of fabrics for costumers.
Petticoat:
This is the fabric I am using for the corded petticoat, it is a cotton duck. I know I am going to get so much secret joy out of having stripey undies :)
As soon as the cording gets out of the dryer I can start sewing the cording channels. Tonight!
Shift:
I want to see if I can eliminate some layers (Hello southern California Sun!) so I am going to attempt the combination pattern from Period Costumes from stage and screen. Anachronistic for 1840, but hopefully more comfortable. If I can't get the pattern to work out I am going to use the Simplicity shift, and the laughing moon pattern for the drawers. I am aiming to make the neckline fairly low. My dress i going to have a lower neckline (slightly 1830s) and I want to be able to use this same shift for a ballgown when I eventually get to making one :)
Bonnet:
The horsehair I got was 6" black pleated from Hatshadows:
http://www.etsy.com/shop/hatshadows?ref=pr_shopIt's not listed in the store but if you message her she will sell it to you on sale. The horsehair has a small flaw along one edge, that is why it's not in the store and she gave me a deal ($2.50 a yard)
These are the reference for the bonnet:
(From Costumers Guide)
Ya I am going to try and make one of the crazy but beautiful Sheer bonnets from the Young Victoria. I probably wont start working on it before all of the undies are done and I start on the dress. I just bought it early because I found the deal and thought this horsehair would be perfect. Different from the movie obviously, but more fitting with my outfit.
