2007 Fic Year In Review

I wasn't planning to post this until after the New Year, on the theory that I might get something else finished and posted by then. I now realize that's not going to happen; even if the current fic (a holdover Numb3rs story from September *g*) gets done this coming weekend, it wouldn't be beta'd in time to be a 2007 story. So I'm just going to post this now.

stories i wrote this year:

In chronological order (completed, or standalone series fragments):

1. Coming To Terms (The Sentinel)
After ten years of friendship, there are still things Jim hasn’t told Blair.

2. Fire and Water, Redux (Stargate SG-1)
The wave of heat and the scream hit him both at once. (deathfic challenge for jedibuttercup)

3. Shiny Daniel Trap (Stargate SG-1)
Reason one thousand and twenty-seven why Daniel is not allowed to touch things off-world. (Humorous deathfic challenge for maevebran)

4. Love Is As Strong As Death (Angel)
Codifying the physics of the soul. (Deathfic challenge for lizamanynames)

5. The End Ahead, the Enemy Behind (Stargate SG-1/Stargate Atlantis)
Double answer to the deathfic challenge: Jack O’Neill to die of Rodney McKay, and Rodney McKay to die of his own heroism. (For lizamanynames and krysalys)

6. Breaking Point (House)
House pushes Wilson just a little too far. (deathfic challenge for mistraltoes)

7. By the Manner of His Death (Harry Potter)
”To Percy Weasley, who redeemed a boring life by the manner of his death.” (deathfic challenge for amberdulen

8. Because I Could Not Stop For Death, pt. 1 and pt. 2 (CSI/Sandman)
I didn’t realize Grissom has a type, until I wrote this fic. Sara, Lady Heather, Death. . . . (deathfic challenge for kerravonsen)

9. Alms For The Poor (Numb3rs)
”It's just a student crush,” Charlie says. “That's it. As long as it doesn't interfere with her work, whoever she is, she can send me all the anonymous letters she wants.” Except that it isn't just a crush, and Charlie may not be the one in danger....

10. Holy Saturday (midrash fic)

11. Resurrection Sunday (midrash fic)

12. Shiny Daniel (sequel) (Stargate SG-1)
Daniel returns from his . . . sojourn. *g*

13. My Adopted Big Brother (The High School Hero Remix) (Stargate SG-1)
What might have happened to mini-Jack after the events of “Fragile Balance.” A remix of stargatebabe’s fic Adopted Kids Are Chosen.

14. Sua Sponte (“of their own accord”) (Numb3rs, AU)
There is an accident during the transportation of two prisoners. This is the aftermath. Post-“The Janus List”

15. Well-Sorted (Harry Potter)
The Sorting Hat and Snape have a conversation. Set during Deathly Hallows.

16. Day Has Gone Down (Numb3rs)
Megan isn’t dealing well with the events of “The Janus List.”

my new WIP's were:

Just one. If feliciakw and sarcasticval have their way, at any rate, the first scene of a powers!Dean fic (Supernatural) that I wrote from sarcasticval’s prompt will become a full-fledged case story with some hefty h/c.

I also worked on my unfinished WIPs from years past:

Harry Potter/CSI: What Is Truth? (unfinished, as yet)

As well as a couple of longer fics that I worked on but did not post any portion of:

The Sentinel/Numb3rs case story, recently titled “A Net Cast Forth”

The Sentinel case story, "Senseless" (NaNo novel, working title)

my favorite story of the year. not the most popular, but the one that makes me happiest:

Sua Sponte (“of their own accord”)

From my past year of writing, what was...

my best story:

Day Has Gone Down

story most under-appreciated by the universe:

both midrash stories, but I kind of expected that

most fun:

Well-Sorted

most disappointing:

The Percy Weasley fic, By the Manner of His Death. The prompt (from amberdulen) was “kill Percy Weasley with a goldfish,” which should have been humor. Instead, my brain went to the darkest place I think it ever has, in fic. I don’t appreciate that, Muse!

story with single sweetest moment:

Coming To Terms is chock-full of sweet moments, but I’d have to pick the ending, I think:

Gina sighed, a long, slow, contented breath. Then she turned her head against Blair’s and whispered in his ear, as if it were a secret, “Hey. We have a son.”

story with most interesting idea:

Well-Sorted

hardest story to write:

Day Has Gone Down (the story’s not even 5,000 words, and it took me 3 months to write!)

easiest story to write:

Alms For The Poor

most unintentionally telling story:

Day Has Gone Down

most "OHMIGOD HEY *I* WROTE THAT" fanon-turned-canon moment:

Arranged transport crash/escape for Dwayne & Colby, Sua Sponte (“of their own accord”); echoed as a plot point in Numb3rs’ season 4 premiere.

looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would did this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?

I think I wrote about what I predicted-which is odd, considering that I figured it would be much harder to make the shift from mostly fic to mostly original writing. Maybe I finished less than I hoped.

what pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in january 2005?

I wrote a fic that I knew would be AU when I wrote it ( Sua Sponte (“of their own accord”)). That’s a first for me.

what's your favorite story of the year?

Again, I’m in too many fandoms to pick just one.

Top marks go to:

consumes thee in this den (Supernatural) by arliss

And here are the runners-up:

Bless Me, Father (Supernatural) by dodger_winslow

Gray (Stargate SG-1) by kalquessa

Prodigal Son (Supernatural /Grey’s Anatomy) by dodger_winslow

Fugitive (Numb3rs, AU) by Zubeneschamali

Wonderful Tragic Mysterious (Harry Potter) by cesario

Accidents Will Happen (Supernatural) by holli

Seed Pearls (Doctor Who, zepplin-verse), by honorh

did you take any writing risks this year?

Well, I started my first story in the horror (well, horror/action) genre: a spec script for Supernatural.

I wrote my first ‘shippy fic ( Day Has Gone Down is Larry/Megan), and my first fic containing an “onscreen” romance between a canon character and an OC I created ( Coming To Terms, though the fic is gen/friendship, not het).

what fanfic or profic goals did you make last year, and how did you do in meeting them?

These are my goals from last year:

Fanfic: write less of it, putting more energy into specs/profic. (Yeah, right. My muse likes fic, so we’ll see.) Finish rough draft of Senseless, revise by myself and with a beta, maybe eventually contact a ‘zine for publication. Work on N3/TS crossover, which is still eating my brain. Stay away from ficathons, except for the Finish-a-thon.

I did 3 ficathons (Multifandom Lyric Wheel, Gen Remix, and the Finish-a-thon), so avoidance worked a little bit. *g* Didn’t manage to finish “Senseless”; did write some more on the N3/TS crossover ( “A Net Cast Forth”), but it’s nowhere near completion.

Profic: finish CSI spec, and rewrite according to notes from my writer’s group (which has 5 hardcore fans of the show, fortunately). Plot and/or write a couple of different specs (Medium, Numb3rs, Supernatural. . . ?). Return to working on movie, finish first draft.

I did finish my CSI spec. I’m still working on the rewrite, though. I’ve plotted a Supernatural spec, and am reworking the plot at the moment (I got derailed from this project twice, once because the show itself stole my first idea, and once because someone in my writer’s group didn’t like it). Not much to show on the movie, although my writer’s group is leaning on me to finish it.

Set aside at least two evenings per week to work on profic, or if I’m stuck on those projects, on fanfic. The point being to make time for the craft instead of just using the cracks around my work and social life and TV watching.
I did pretty well on this. And I shall strive to do better in the New Year, because at least trying to set time aside seems to have a positive effect on my productivity.

do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year?

Profic: finish CSI spec rewrite according to notes from my writer’s group, and polish it to the point where I can submit it for the Disney Fellowship this coming July. Write complete first draft of my movie, dammit! Fix the plot of my Supernatural spec; finish writing it. Find plots for a couple of other TV specs (Numb3rs, Bones, House).

Set aside at least two evenings per week to work on profic, or if I’m stuck on those projects, on fanfic. The point being to make time for the craft instead of just using the cracks around my work and social life and TV watching.

Fanfic: write less of it, putting more energy into specs/profic. Finish at least one of my longer projects. Finish that darn TS AU short fic (you know the one, feliciakw). *sigh*

Maybe, figure out what I’m doing, still in fandom but unable to be fully committed because of RL projects. This is getting a bit frustrating, actually. . . .
