When Lady Ayame entered their cave requesting for Tsuki, he knew something had happened. To Ayame, Tsuki was always Tsu-chan. She only ever called Tsuki by her name when she was being formal or she was mad at her.
“What is it?” Tsuki asked.
“It’s Gramps,” was all Ayame said.
Judging by the sadness in Ayame’s voice and the quickness to which Tsuki responded, this was bad. The Elder’s slow illness must have taken a turn for the worst.
“Grandpa’s dying, isn’t he?” Tsuki said.
Ayame nodded. “Right now, all we can do is make him comfortable. He wants you to watch over him. He wanted all of us to be together with him.”
Tsuki was taken by surprise for a moment, but nodded. “Of course.” She turned to him. “Sorry Kai, this might take some time.”
“Take as much time as you need.”
Minutes passed and then an hour; how long would this go on?
He met with Kouga outside the Elder’s cave. He hadn’t meant to run into the Leader, it just sort of happened that way. “You’re not going to go see him?”
“No. He talked to me before he got worse.” Kouga sighed. “Damn it. How am I going to break this to everyone?”
“You really will be the head of the clan now.”
When the ladies emerged, Ayame made it no secret that she was upset. She could barely keep herself together as she fell into Kouga. Tsuki on the other hand was quiet and showing an outward emotion. Was she like this when her men died in battle?
They walked back in silence, gripping one another’s hands. It was only when he shut the entrance to their cave that she broke down crying in his arms.
The Elder was really gone.
