There was a knock on the door. Kohaku’s voice drifted in. “Inuyasha-sama, please open the door.”

“Go away!” Inuyasha growled, as clasped Jirou’s blanket to his heart. He didn’t need anybody. He would remain inside the house and drown in the scent of his family. In fact, if he closed his eyes, he could almost imagine Kagome and Jirou to be asleep upon the futon.

Kohaku knocked again. Damn that boy! Wouldn’t he even let him have his delusion in peace?

“Look who’s here!”

Inuyasha snorted, ‘Nice try!’

“Inuyasha, open the door!”

His heart almost jumped to his throat. Kagome?

“It’s about Jirou,” Kagome spoke again.

In a moment, Inuyasha was at the door. “What happened to Jirou?” he shouted, only to come face to face with four concerned faces.

It was a very angry hanyou that sat with the monk, the two taijiyas and the fox that night.

“I’m sorry, Inuyasha-sama,” Kohaku apologized for the tenth time, “There was no other way to communicate with you.”

“I don’t want to communicate with you, isn’t that obvious?”

“Oh don’t be such an ass,” Shippou quipped as he rubbed the goose egg upon his head, “You know you love Kagome so swallow your pride and go get her.”

“Keh!” Inuyasha exclaimed, trying to push back the lump in his throat, “What part of ‘she doesn’t need me’ don’t you understand? She thinks I shouldn’t stay around Jirou either.”

“I do not concur,” Miroku spoke up, “Kagome-sama gave up her family to be with you. She married you and turned your shack into a home; she bore three lovely children for you. If anything, I’d say she needs you very much.”

“I had gone to stop her, you know, from leaving,” Inuyasha’s voice cracked, “But she turned her face away.”

“She was just angry with you,” Miroku tried to reason.

“I’m sorry we were not around to support you during the difficult times,” Sango said sombrely - it was breaking her heart to see the usually dauntless warrior in so much agony, “I can’t imagine how hard it must have been, but reconsider your decision, Inuyasha. You fought with Naraku to the bitter end, all in the name of justice. Are you going to give up so easily now? Won’t you fight for Kagome-chan?”

Inuyasha rose with a ‘Keh!’ and stomped out of the hut. But Sango noted with slight pleasure that her words had hit home. He would rather die than do it in front of them, but in the privacy of the night he would probably go to get back Kagome.

Inuyasha blinked into the sunlight - they said it had been two days since Kagome was gone. Two days that had seemed like a lifetime without Kagome to him. How was he going to spend a lifetime without her, then? She might not need him or even wish to look at his face, but the truth was - he needed her like the very air he breathed.
