What force or spirit could enter thee
To make thy voice so strong
Your words, as powerful as the untamed sea,
Inspired a nation to right their wrongs
You lifted a people beyond our means
And gave sight where darkness once shone
Then preached to people of prophetic dreams
Pointing to the Promised Land, our coming home
You marched bravely through those southern places
Where poplar trees bore strange fruit
But brought hope filled smiles to all our faces
That no more blood would feed their roots
And on that tear drenched day when you passed away
Even the birds would fly half mast
And our souls stood still with nothing to say
But we knew you were free at last
You gave your life and now dwell in our minds
And I pray forever, there you will be seen
May you never fade in the passage of time
May the world never forget, Martin Luther King
