AHAHAHAHA THERE ARE CLIPS OF RYUUSEI! FINALLY! You can even hear what I'm assuming is the opening theme playing in the background of most of them (and it's already stuck in my head. Dammit, Arashi). Nino appears to have a permanent bitchface (except for that one really weird face in the second clip. What the heck?) Also in some of the photo op shots you can see him standing next to the guy playing Yukinari, which is hilarious because he just barely comes past the guy's shoulder XDD (and WTF, he's working in a restaurant? That's already something that's different from the book. Not a huge stretch for his character, really, but still.) The color scheme is a lot brighter than I would have imagined, too. Actually now that I think about it, I was visualizing almost all the settings and costumes in the whole book as kind of dingy and either pale earthtones or black/white/grey O.o;;

Speaking of Japanese books, I'm about halfway through Nobuta o Produce now ^w^

The book is told in first person from Shuji's point of view, so already it's a lot different than Ryuusei, and a lot harder to follow, I found. Shuji goes off on tangents a lot and makes up weird nicknames for people/things, so you have to really pay attention to understand what he's going on about. Lots of slang, too. Also if you thought Shuji was an ass at the beginning of the show, let me tell you right now he's TEN TIMES MORE of an ass when you can hear his thoughts ^^;;; I actually found the book a little hard to get into at first, because it was just page upon page of Shuji complaining about how the weather sucks, his school sucks, his classmates suck, his teacher sucks, his friends suck, etc etc. He doesn't think Mariko sucks, but he does think she's a little weird, because (from what I can tell, I was kind of spacing out at that part) she just up and offered to start making him lunch about three months ago and never seemed to want anything in return. He never says it outright, but I think it's pretty clear that most of the reason he hangs out with her is that she feeds him (also she's hot, which he doesn't really comment on particularly other than that it makes him cooler for having a hot "girlfriend".) In contrast to the show I don't think she thinks they're dating (or at least Shuji doesn't seem to think that she thinks they're dating, but Shuji's not the most reliable narrator in the world). Shuji's perfectly happy to let everyone else think they're dating, though, and Mariko either doesn't know that everyone thinks that or doesn't care.

I found the book a lot more fun once Nobuta showed up XD Though the character is pretty different form the show.

In the book, Nobuta's overweight. Nobuta's unattractive and kind of sweaty. Nobuta wears glasses. Nobuta has gross hair and is kind of pimply. Nobuta has a uniform that doesn't fit right.

Also, Nobuta's a boy.

His actual name is Kotani Shinta, but when he writes his first name on the board (信太) about half the class misreads the kanji as "Nobuta", and for Shuji, at least, the mental nickname sticks. I actually like book!Nobuta a lot. He's earnest and hardworking and really wants people to like him (or at least not actively hate him), which is a breath of fresh air after thirty or more pages of Shuji's self-centered whining. Possibly my second favorite scene so far has been right after Shuji agreed to "produce" Nobuta, he's like "You need a stage name!" and Nobuta's like "What?" Shuji proclaims dramatically, "You're Nobuta!" obviously very proud of himself even though he's been calling the poor boy that in his head ever since he met him. And Nobuta, very good-naturedly and earnestly (and not at all offended that he's hung out with Shuji a couple of times now and he still evidently doesn't know his real name) says "No, no, it's actually read 'Shinta', but I don't mind, a lot of people make that mistake..." and Shuji, somewhat annoyed that his genius nickname didn't immediately elicit praise of his cleverness, grumps "No, that's your stage name!" and Nobuta's only response is "...Oh. O-okay."

Also in the book, you know Akira? Does not exist He's an original character for the show. Which made me a little mad at first, because he was probably my favorite character from the show, but then I thought about it a little. If Akira wasn't in the book, that means they must have written that role in FOR Yamapi. I think I heard somewhere that they really wanted him in their show (like, before they'd even cast Kame or Maki), and I'm pretty sure he would have been a terrible Shuji (I mean, nothing against Yamapi, he's a really good actor, but I'm not sure he can pull off being that shallow and bitchy. And Kame was great in that role, especially since they toned down his asshole-ishness for the drama). That's probably also why half the stuff that was coming out of Akira's mouth in that show was ad-libbed, because they didn't really have a firm character already set up and could just kind of let Yamapi do whatever he wanted. Also why Akira is kind of an exaggeration of Yamapi's actual personality. Which means Yamapi didn't pick up little bits of Akira's personality, he was already like that. Which is kind of awesome XDD

(Speaking of show-only characters, as far as I can tell Shuji is an only child. He only narrates about when he's at school or out with his friends from school, so we haven't actually seen his parents yet, just had him make reference to them every now and then. It's implied that they both work, or at least that they're both usually out of the house during the day.)

Wow, that ended up longer than I thought it would O.o; I think I'm just going to end it here for today ^^;;

(Oh, and I got a new bowl this weekend. It has an eggplant on it XDDDDD )

In conclusion: Yay Ryuusei, yay Nobuta, and I'm a huge nerd
;B

i'm a nerd, j-dramas, books, squee and flail
