I'm in a class on performance art. It's the most dumbed down piece of garbage course ever. Actually the worst class I've ever taken.
Every performance artist we look at the professor says something like "this artist is interested in challenging racial/gender stereotypes." It's like her mantra.
Last class after our prof said "this artist is interested in challenging stereotypes of aboriginal people. His work mixes art and politics." a girl raised her hand and said "Hmm... I was just wondering, could it be true of any other performance artists that they mix politics and art? I'm just a little confused."
The teacher responds: "That is a great question! Class, what do we think?"
We spent the next 20 minutes pretty much naming every single work that we had seen in the entire semester and going "hmm... yeah that one could be seen as mixing politics and art too!"

I hate my performance class.

Hey Trevor,

Good entry, I liked the part about the coffee shop boner the best.

Is your performance class just theory/history? Last semester I took a course called "art as theory, theory as art" which is actually a secret code for doing nothing all semester. We didn't even get to the point where politics and art intersect.

Good luck with the next couple of months.

You know Darryl, I would kill for a class that was just theory/history. This class ignores history completely and we only deal with theory like this:
"OK class... So there's this thing called postmodernism [or gender theory]. In this overhead which I'm going to read in an excruciatingly slow voice I'm going to dumb everything down to the point where it no longer means anything!"

It was originally not an art history class, but a "Theatre and Film" class. It was just cross-listed this year. And what a mistake they made. We watch the most irrelevant garbage ever (the professor spent 3 lecture hours talking about HER OWN awful performance group in the mid 90s) and then have the dumbest conversations EVER.

Anyway, at least it's "easy".
Hope everything's going well dude!
