Chapter 4
Kim JunSu returned at around 9 o’clock with two body guards following close behind him but soon retired to the back of the mansion. JunSu didn’t allow them to wander around.
JaeJoong returned to his room to take a shower and as he stepped out of the bathroom, he heard a phone ring. It surprised him that JunSu would let him have a phone in the room. With hesitance, he picked up the phone only to realize that it was only JunSu calling to tell him to join him for a drink. JaeJoong sighed at his own naivety. How could he have even thought that JunSu would let him have a phone? It was just an extension line that probably ran through out all the rooms.
He went downstairs but as he was approaching the living room, he heard fighting that made him stop. He brought his ear up to the door to listen.
“Dammit! Why aren’t you listening to me?” YooChun’s was saying in an agitated voice. “It’s always them quiet ones you have to watch out for. He’s dangerous and a fucking detective no less. I know he’s out to get us.”
“It honestly doesn’t matter if he knows or not,” JunSu said calmly.
What the fuck do you mean by that? What are you going to do about LiYin and the guns? JaeJoong knows about them.”
“Probably.”
“No, you’re not serious. Come on, JunSu. Stop this shit. Just stop it. Stop getting involved in such dangerous business deals while you can.”
“YooChun my dear, this isn’t business. It’s my hobby.”
“Argh! If you love guns so much, I’ll just use that plant in the Philippines. You can make all the guns you want there to your heart’s content. You don’t need to give such a project to that little kid.”
“YooChun, the only thing that’s important to me right now is to put the guns that LiYin makes out onto the market. They’re the best. If I had wanted to make money, I would’ve already made some by selling it in mass-production.”
After a moment of silence, YooChun said in a whining voice, “I just can’t understand you.”
“You don’t have to, YooChun. I understand you and that’s all that matters. No one understands you like I do. Not even your brother. That should be enough.”
“What? What’s enough? The thing with LiYin and now JaeJoong? You’re seriously so selfish. Does my opinion even matter to you?”
“YooChun my dear, I know that you’re worried about me. When it comes down to it, all I have is you and you have me. Just remember that, okay? You do know that, right?”
YooChun seemed calmed by JunSu’s words, as if any doubts he had just vanished. JunSu had cleverly removed all the thorns of distrust that had sprouted within the younger man and taken care of it.
When JaeJoong noticed it had gotten quiet inside, he knocked on the door. As soon as YooChun saw JaeJoong, he made a face of disgust and sat down on the edge of the sofa.
JunSu and JaeJoong faced the window. JunSu opened the top buttons of his shirt a little and drank same brandy with a laid back attitude. Then he looked like he suddenly remembered something and left the living room.
He returned holding a small beautiful wooden box. “I got this in today. Isn’t it beautiful?”
He set it down before him and that was when JaeJoong saw that it was a specimen box. He looked at the butterfly with its wings spread inside and his eyes widened.
It was a large butterfly with very vivid metallic blue wings. He’d never seen such a beautiful butterfly before.
JunSu traced his finger along the glass and quietly explained, “This butterfly can only be found in Central and South America. It’s a Morpho butterfly and also referred to as the most beautiful butterfly in the world. Some people call in a living jewel or a flying jewel because of its beautiful blue color; but interestingly enough, the wings aren’t actually blue. This butterfly has scales that have a complex structure that reflects light from the blue wavelength. It has a structural color like a jewel beetle or the feathers of a peacock.”
JaeJoong has never had an interest in butterflies but he couldn’t help but be fascinated by the beautiful wings but then he realized something. He looked closely and realized something strange.
“It only has a head,” he said. The butterfly’s abdomen was missing, making the wings looks so much larger. “Let me guess, one of your other weird hobbies, huh?” he added.
All the butterfly specimens he had seen at JunSu’s condo only had one wing each. JunSu had gone through the trouble of plucking one wing from each butterfly.
“I didn’t do it,” JunSu answered. “I bought this from a specimen dealer. This type of butterfly has a lot of oil in its abdomen and when it dies the oil seeps out, which takes away the beauty of the wings. So when specimens of Morpho butterflies are collected, they’re usually scooped out from the head down.”
In order to preserve its beauty, it had to have its abdomen cut. It was such a cruel thing to do.
“That’s cruel,” JaeJoong murmured to himself. “They weren’t born to please the eyes of humans.”
JunSu immediately replied, “Really now? I think this butterfly is happy and at peace.”
“Happy? Peace?” JaeJoong asked.
“Yes! Did you know butterflies have short lives? But now, it’s a specimen whose beautiful figure can continue to exist. This butterfly eats disgusting things like liquid from rotten fruit and moisture from animal excretions. It eats dirty things that accumulate in its abdomen. It fascinates people with its beauty. If it didn’t have these scales, it would be an ordinary moth with brown wings.”
JunSu leaned forward on the sofa, putting his hand out. “I’m not interested in things are just beautiful,” he paused, motioning for JaeJoong to come closer to him.
JaeJoong hesitated but moved forward towards JunSu’s hand as the man moved a finger along JaeJoong’s jawline, making JaeJoong flinch. “I’m strongly attracted to things that are beautiful on the outside but ugly and distorted on the inside.” JunSu chuckled and leaned back against the sofa, propping his elbows up. “If you became a little uglier on the inside, you’d be more beautiful, too.”
JaeJoong had a bad feeling in his stomach.
“Get down on your knees like a dog,” JunSu calmly ordered as he uncrossed his legs.
“What?” JaeJoong asked, shock evident on his face.
“Get down on your knees like a dog and kiss my foot,” JunSu repeated.
“Screw you.”
“Maybe you forgot. You belong to me now. You no longer have the right to say no,” JunSu said calmly. JaeJoong gritted his teeth. No matter how ridiculous the request was, he had to obey. He got off the sofa and knelt on the ground. JunSu held his foot out to him. “Kiss my shoe.”
YooChun sat up and glared at JaeJoong with a stabbing look in his eyes.
“Come on,” JunSu’s voice murmured. “Try to kiss the foot of the man you despise so much. I want you to feel humiliated.”
“Why?” JaeJoong questioned.
“Simple. I like it,” JunSu replied with a smile.
JaeJoong held his breath and slowly lowered his head.
JunSu’s expensive-looking shoe came closer to his face.
JaeJoong tightened his lips and pushed them to the tip of shoe.
The black flame inside of him flickered. It only happened for a moment. He willed the flame deeper inside of himself and closed it off. There was no meaning to this act. He turned off his emotions and answered all of JunSu’s requests.
“Hmm! Your true self hasn’t returned yet?” JunSu grabbed JaeJoong’s chin and made him look up. “Even if you’re on a chain, don’t hide it. Don’t disappoint me, JaeJoong.” JunSu turned away from JaeJoong and looked at YooChun. “YooChun, how long are you staying here? YunHo’s guys don’t know where you are, right?
“I’m keeping in contact every day,” YooChun answered petulantly. “Even since YunHo got shot, they’ve been hounding me. When I’m home or even when I’m taking a piss. Can’t fucking stand that shit.”
“Because you’re the boss. You can stay as long as you like, but don’t tell anyone about this place. It’s my special hiding place.” JunSu gulped down his brandy and looked at YooChun meaningfully. “I heard you killed the bird while LiYin was watching. Come here,” JunSu ordered, making YooChun scoff.
“What? You’re not going to make me kiss your shoe, too, are you? Get real.”
“Come stand in front of me,” JunSu commanded.
YooChun stood sulkily in front of JunSu. JunSu hugged YooChun’s hips slowly, bringing the younger man closer.
“W-what are you---?” YooChun stammered.
“Why are you such a bad boy,” said JunSu. “You’re such a handful.”
JunSu stroked YooChun slowly and then dropped his hand into YooChun’s pocket. When he brought it back out, he was gripping a silver butterfly knife. He quickly popped open the blade. YooChun held his breath as JunSu ran the blade over his wrist; his moves were quick, smooth and not showing an ounce of hesitation.
“Ugh.” A tiny red line appeared on YooChun’s palm as blood trickled down from it. YooChun tried to pull his hand away but JunSu held on tight, not letting him.
“When little boys are naughty, they need to be punished,” JunSu murmured in a gentle voice as he ran the knife over YooChun’s hand again.
YooChun’s face turned pale as he saw the cross etched on his palm. He dropped to his knees. “Ahh-”
“Stop it!” JaeJoong screamed.
JunSu looked over at JaeJoong and chuckled. “Why do you care? He could care less for you.”
“Be-because he is YunHo’s brother,” JaeJoong whispered.
YooChun looked over his shoulder at JaeJoong, shocked.
JunSu knelt down and put his arm around YooChun. “Don’t you feel better now that I’ve punished you, YooChun?” he whispered as if he were hypnotizing YooChun, gently stroking YooChun’s hair. “You were a bad boy and that’s why you were abandoned. Left behind. Left behind by YunHo. By your mother. You were probably so lonely, weren’t you? I know you want to be a good boy; no one will leave you again. They won’t treat you like you’re in the way. But no matter how much you try, you can’t be good. So when you’re scolded, you feel like you’ve managed to be just a little bit good and you feel happy. Am I right? I understand that. I’ll scold you whenever you like. This pain, it’s necessary. Do you understand?”
JunSu softly kissed YooChun’s forehead and placed the knife of the floor and calmly left the room as if nothing happened.
YooChun clutched his bloody hand, trying to bear the pain. JaeJoong looked around and picked up the cloth that had been on the table, folded it and wrapped it around YooChun’s hand. The cuts weren’t deep but since it was the shape of a cross, it didn’t look like it would stop bleeding anytime soon.
"Put some antiseptic on it later,” JaeJoong advised.
“Leave me the hell alone.” YooChun pushed JaeJoong’s hand away as he went back to the sofa. “Stop staring at me like that you freak,” he snapped, glaring with bloodshot eyes.
“YooChun, why are you with JunSu?” JaeJoong asked. “Does it not bother you that he treats you like this?”
JunSu told YooChun that the reason he was abandoned was because he had been a bad boy. No matter how you looked at it or thought about it, JunSu was definitely referring to when YunHo had run off with YooChun’s mother. JunSu was controlling YooChun by exploiting the wounds in his heart.
YooChun scowled. “Shut the fuck up. I can do whatever I want! What about you? You’re the only fool here. I thought you had more of a backbone.”
JaeJoong couldn’t help but feel sad for him. YooChun was just attacking others to forget his own feelings.
“I’d lick the bottom of JunSu’s shoes if it meant that I could protect YunHo,” JaeJoong said seriously. He was surprised by his own words. He sounded like a loser but that was when he realized something for the very first time. No matter how humiliated he was, there was something more important to him than his pride. There was someone more important to him than himself. And that one person was YunHo.
All this time he had been fighting for only himself. He had only himself to protect but now he was fighting to protect YunHo.
A strong light returned to JaeJoong’s eyes. JunSu hadn’t defeated him just yet. Even if he wasn’t a detective anymore, he would take JunSu head-on. He was finally able to decide his course of action. For his future. His future with YunHo.
“JunSu won’t lay a hand on YunHo. Why don’t you wake up and see that?” YooChun said in an annoyed voice and turned his face away from JaeJoong’s.
“You’re the one that needs to wake up.” JaeJoong stared at YooChun’s profile and said vehemently, “YooChun, I’m going to fight JunSu for what I believe in. No matter how unsightly or pathetic I look while I’m doing it, I won’t lose to him. Don’t run away. Fight. Go see YunHo and face your true feelings.”
“God! Just shut the fuck up! So sick of your preaching!” YooChun gripped his glass and threw it on the floor. Shards of glass explored around them. “Who the hell do you think you are? You’re just some detective that is only using YunHo. Opening your legs to him, like the whore you are, so you can get information from him. Stop acting like his lover. It makes me sick. If anyone finds out he’s been cooperating with you, he’s done for. Do you think getting your finger cut off isn’t a big deal? If you really care for him like you say you do, you’ll never get near him again.”
What YooChun was saying did make sense. Until now, JaeJoong had been using YunHo. Looking back on it, he had given his body, but that wasn’t just an excuse. He wanted to have sex with YunHo. From the moment he had longed for YunHo, their relationship as just a detective and an S had already failed. But JaeJoong had thought that they would be able to make it, so they had continued on with their dangerous tightrope walk.
“Who are you to lecture me?” YooChun said with an angry look mustered on his face. “You have no damn business talking about YunHo and I!” He stood up just as his cell phone rang. He took it out and answered it. “It’s me. Oh, it’s you, DaeSung. What do you want? How am I supposed to know? Huh? I told you, I don’t know! I’m the only boss in name, you know. Just fucking take care of it. No, I won’t be home for a while. What? No. Just send someone else.”
JaeJoong watched as YooChun talked harshly on the phone. The young man was clearly being impatient again. He moved forward without looking back on the things that were painful to him. He walked out of the room still talking on the phone.
Suddenly JaeJoong felt sad. He stood up and went out to the terrace. He saw white waves crashing again and again in the dark sea. He felt the cold sea breeze on his face as he leaned against the balcony. From the corner of his eyes, he saw something shiny. It was a spider web reflecting the moonlight. A moth was stuck in it. It was powerless, caught in the spider’s thread. No matter how much it was struggling, it just couldn’t get free. JaeJoong let out a dry laugh as he thought how much the moth was like him and YooChun.
The next day, JunSu left again in the afternoon, leaving to attend to some non-jopok business. From overhearing the conversation, JaeJoong gathered that JunSu also owned a real estate and investment business.
When JunSu left, YooChun hopped into a black Royce and went off somewhere. Apparently he had driven from Seoul to the villa himself. It seemed as if he had taken the chance to escape from his place when he thought none of his underlings were around.
YunHo was an illegitimate child, but he was still the oldest son. He was also the young head counselor of the Park Group, so for such an important member of the family to be shot, the group must be having a rough time. YooChun had run to JunSu to escape reality. If this situation continued, YooChun would lose his position as the boss of the group.
JaeJoong wasn’t being watched within the villa and he could move around as he pleased. No one stopped him if he went outside. The villa was so beautiful but being here in his position, it only felt like a cage. No matter how beautiful, he was still a prisoner here.
Just to see what would happen, he acted like he was going to walk down to the beach, he got pretty far away without anyone chasing him, not even MinSik, the butler. If he really felt like it, he could easily run away and escape at any time. But he knew he couldn’t leave just yet.
He had to, no, he wanted to protect YunHo. But before that, he had to find out the truth from JunSu first. He wanted to hear the truth of the situation involving Boa from JunSu’s own lips. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t be able to move forward.
After returning from the beach, he saw LiYin sleeping, curled up in a ball on the sofa in the living room. Her sleeping face looked innocent.
“Master JaeJoong, is anything wrong?” a quiet voice asked as he watched LiYin sleeping from the hallway. He turned around and saw MinSik standing there. The old man was holding a blanket.
“No. Is that for LiYin?” he asked, looking at the blanket.
MinSik smiled, his eyes crinkling as he nodded. JaeJoong moved away from the door to let the older man pass. He put the blanket over LiYin. It was like watching a grandfather fussing over his granddaughter.
Immediately, JaeJoong thought of Zhang Jian and felt sad. He wondered if the old man knew JunSu was using his granddaughter.
MinSik shut the door and returned to stand beside JaeJoong. He softly said to JaeJoong, “She really loves that sofa.”
“Have you been with JunSu for a long time now, MinSik-shii?” JaeJoong asked.
“Yes Sir. I’ve served him since he was a young boy.”
It sounded like he knew JunSu very well. JaeJoong found it hard to believe that that disgusting man had once been an innocent child.
“Were you in the Kim syndicate, then?” JaeJoong asked.
“That’s correct. Well, I wasn’t a member, just a servant. I worked at Master Kim’s uncle’s house. After I got older, I was allowed to retire but Master Kim returned from his stay overseas and invited me to work for him here.”
JaeJoong sighed inwardly. The old man wasn’t a regular employee after all. He couldn’t understand JunSu.
“If you have any questions, please ask me,” MinSik said. “I’m sure I can answer anything you want to know about Master JunSu.”
The words reminded JaeJoong of JunSu telling YooChun he didn’t care what JaeJoong found out.
“Anything?” JaeJoong asked.
“Yes, anything, Sir,” MinSik answered, standing up straight.
“I’ve heard that JunSu grew up at his uncle’s house. Why?”
After a pause, MinSik spoke. “Master JunSu’s mother was Mistress Eunyce. His uncle was the boss of the group and very fond of his younger sister. She was unmarried when she gave birth to him. She was in poor health, so she stayed at the main house and raised him there. He and his mother lived there under his uncle’s protection until he turned eighteen. But when his mother passed away, he left the mansion and lived by himself.”
MinSik explained everything without any hesitation and JaeJoong didn’t find anything strange in his story. However, something was bothering him.
“But the boss had two sons, right? Did JunSu get along with his cousins?”
MinSik’s expression changed slightly at JaeJoong’s question. “No, unfortunately, they didn’t have a very good relationship. Master JunSu was doted on by his uncle, and his two sons weren’t too fond of that fact.”
“What about his aunt?”
“She was the same. His uncle really treasured Mistress Eunyce and her son so much; she resented them both. She was especially harsh to Master JunSu. Of course she was careful to do so outside of his uncle’s view.”
“So in other words, he was bullied.”
MinSik nodded. “I can’t tell you more details about it since it’s a personal embarrassment of the family I serve, but I know Master JunSu went through some very tough times. With his uncle being away from the house often, his mother was locked up by herself, so all the attacks were directed at him. He never said anything because he didn’t want to cause trouble for his mother. He’s a very strong person.”
When he thought of JunSu now, JaeJoong couldn’t imagine the man not reacting to an attack. He couldn’t believe JunSu would do that even for his mother.
“Why did his relationship with his uncle break down?” he asked.
“After all that happened, Master JunSu just wanted to get away from that house. So as soon as Mistress Eunyce passed away, he went away. No matter how hard his uncle reached out to him, he never came back.”
JaeJoong could guess what kind of ill feelings JunSu must have had about being brought up in that kind of environment but he still wasn’t satisfied. There was something about MinSik’s explanation that didn’t add up. He wasn’t entirely convinced of it.
Boa had been killed because she was caught up in a dispute between the Kim Group and AJH Association. But why had JunSu gotten involved in his uncle’s dispute? JaeJoong didn’t understand the motive behind it. YunHo had told JaeJoong before but he couldn’t believe JunSu would purposefully go after people from the AJH Association just because he hated his uncle.
JaeJoong had held so much conviction about JunSu being the one responsible for the incident, but now his feelings wavered. He was beginning to think it was useless to dig up information about JunSu. He could only get at the surface.
There was a reason JunSu was such a cruel man. Maybe JaeJoong needed to do a more thorough investigation to find out why. If he searched, maybe he would find out it…
But he just didn’t know what he could do. He didn’t know what move to make in this situation. The truth was there in front of him, just waiting for him inside of JunSu’s heart. But even when JaeJoong was right next to the man, he couldn’t touch JunSu’s heart.
JaeJoong clenched his hand in frustration.
