Chapter 9
JaeJoong didn’t go home that night. He stayed there in YunHo’s arms all night. He didn’t want to leave the man’s side.
They didn’t exchange words. They didn’t need too. Their bodies did the talking, all night long. They finally fell asleep silently, wrapped up in each other’s arms, clinging onto each other’s warmth with their legs intertwining beneath the sheets. They were at peace as they were cut off from the rest of the world-a harsh reality that seemed to be against them.
Early next morning, JaeJoong awoke with a smile. He removed YunHo’s hands off his hips and dragged himself out of bed. He debated whether to wake Yunho up or not but in the end he left YunHo’s sleeping side with a kiss on the elder’s forehead. He went home to change his clothes and eat some breakfast and then he headed out again to the Zhang Iron Works.
When he got there, he found the door open so he peeked in. Inside, he spotted a man working on one of the machines. The young man shut off the machine and approached JaeJoong when he noticed him.
“May I help you, Sir?”
“Yes. I was actually looking for Mr. Zhang? Is he here?”
“Boss is in his house resting. He isn’t feeling too well today.”
JaeJoong thanked the friendly boy and headed to the living quarters just around the factory. Just as his fingers reached the doorbell, he could hear old man Zhang screaming: “Leave it child! You can’t just do whatever you want! Why can’t you see that?”
JaeJoong tried to sneak a peek from the window but before he got a chance, the door swung open, almost missing him by a few centimeters, followed by LiYin running straight into him with force.
“Ahh!” LiYin exclaimed with shock when she looked up to see JaeJoong.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. Are you alright?” JaeJoong asked.
LiYin didn’t answer but instead, she turned around and ran away toward the factory.
“Lili! Wait! Lili!” Jian shouted after her. “Oh, Mr. JaeHwa right? What are you doing here?” Jian was surprised to JaeJoong again.
“I’m sorry to disturb you. I thought I would come by to check up on you, to see how you were doing. You seem busy so I’ll just come again another day.”
“Oh, no. No! Don’t worry about that. You know how teenagers can be. It’s nothing important.
Jian invited JaeJoong into the house for some tea and JaeJoong accepted the offer as he stepped into the living room.
“How have you been? I know that it is none of my business, but I know of a really good hospital. It’s known for their specialists who can treat patients like LiYin. I brought a brochure with me…” JaeJoong offered the pamphlet to Jian, who accepted it with a somber expression on his face.
“You really didn’t have to do this but thank you for thinking of us.”
JaeJoong had investigated the hospital so that he could have an excuse to visit the Zhang family again. Although to say that that was JaeJoong’s only motivation would be untrue. JaeJoong was genuinely concerned about LiYin and thought that if she got the proper help, she could be treated.
“Umm…were you arguing with LiYin?”
“Nothing important.” Jian smiled, but he wasn’t convincing. He flicked through the brochure that JaeJoong had given him. “I haven’t been well lately and she’s had to manage a lot of the work. She accepted some new work recently without asking for my approval. We can’t manage big orders here, so I told her to refuse. I know she likes a challenge but this one is just way too difficult. This is work, and she learns to take it more seriously.”
Jian continued to speak with JaeJoong about his worries regarding his health and his business. As JaeJoong listened on carefully to the old man, he was starting to doubt that the old man had anything to do with bootlegged guns. In that case, Jian’s relationship with KangTa had nothing to do with JaeJoong’s case.
KangTa had been selling bootlegged guns to the Jopok. And the members of the gun shop in Seoul have been approached as potential buyers for these guns. Jopok had enough skills to make and sell high-quality weapons. Could all these things really just be coincidences?
No. They had to be related. JaeJoong knew he’d missed something. He would have to go through all the files and start all over again.
He left the Zhang’s house and as he walked back around the building, he met LiYin, who was standing next to a water fountain with her sleeves rolled up. JaeJoong wondered if she was cold. He approached her, intending to speak directly with her about the hospital he’d found.
“Miss LiYin?” he called out to her.
She swung around. She must have been washing her face, because drops of water dripped from her nose and chin, and her hair was stuck to her cheeks.
“I just spoke to your grandfather about this hospital…”
Suddenly, JaeJoong stopped. He stared at LiYin’s arms.
LiYin realized what JaeJoong was looking at and quickly unrolled her sleeves. She tried to run inside the factory but JaeJoong caught her by the wrist before she could escape.
“What are those?” JaeJoong asked.
LiYin’s eyes betrayed nothing.
“On your right arm. I saw something. What is it?” JaeJoong asked again.
Kiri’s lips moved, but no sound came out.
A butterfly.
JaeJoong was taken back. Did she just mouth out the word butterfly?
LiYin saw this has a chance to escape into the factory and she took it.
JaeJoong had a feeling he’d seen something he shouldn’t have; LiYin had a colorful tattoo of a butterfly on her right arm. But then again, butterflies were a popular tattoo design. Especially among women.
But the one LiYin had was not your ordinary butterfly. This butterfly only had one wing.
***
The following day, JaeJoong was still trying to understand what he’d seen. Was he imagining it? The tattoo seemed to indicate that there was a connection between LiYin and JunSu. If that was the case, the worse possible scenario presented itself. The guns that KangTa had been selling hadn’t been made by Jian but by his granddaughter, LiYin. If Jian had passed on his experience and knowledge to her, then she could easily make works of such superior craftsmanship.
JaeJoong learned at KangTa’s funeral that Jian and him were acquaintances. LiYin could’ve have met JunSu though KangTa. JaeJoong didn’t know what their exact relationship was though. One thing he did know was that JunSu was a fun fanatic, and if LiYin knew what her grandfather knew, JunSu would’ve found a use for her.
She, however, was young. Did she even know that she was breaking laws? Jian must’ve mentioned to her the laws on the consequences of bootlegging guns or anything to do with its production. After all, he himself had served a big sentence in jail for that same crime. He wouldn’t want his precious granddaughter to follow in such a dark path. Or would he?
The more JaeJoong thought about it, the more questions popped into his mind. This whole thing was just one big nightmare. And today was the day he had to give his regular report.
JaeJoong could only speculate on LiYin’s involvement, so he decided that he could skip out on that speculation for the time being.
He finished preparing the details that were more relevant and was about to leave his apartment when his phone rang.
It was his superior, TaeYoung, who sounded flustered.
“JaeJoong? Have you heard the news?”
“No. What news? I didn’t hear anything.”
“I guess you haven’t,” TaeYoung muttered, partly to himself. “Sit down. Jung YunHo has been shot.”
It took JaeJoong a few seconds to process this information. “I’m sorry. Can you repeat that?”
“Your S, Jung YunHo, has been shot.”
When JaeJoong heard it again, he felt faint. He got dizzy and felt like throwing up so he closed his eyes and grabbed the counter for support.
“JaeJoong? Are you there? JaeJoong? Are you okay?” TaeYoung asked urgently.
“Yeah. Yeah! I’m fine. How is Jung doing?” JaeJoong asked, preparing for the worst.
“There hasn’t been any word on that yet.”
That wasn’t what JaeJoong wanted to hear. He ran to the bathroom and threw up into the toilet with one hand holding onto the phone.
He could hear TaeYoung on the line calling out for him he pressed mute on the phone so that the sound of the flushing toilet couldn’t be heard.
He didn’t want his superior to know that he’d just retched out his lunch. Showing emotions hinted that he cared for his S, more than he was suppose too. Walking over to the sink, he rinsed his mouth out and looked into the mirror. His face was a mess. He took a breath and brought the phone to his ears again.
“Sir, can you hear me? Sorry I think I lost signal for a second.” JaeJoong said, lying.
“Oh okay. I was worried there for a second.”
“So…d…do you know how it happened?” JaeJoong said, trying very hard to keep his voice from shaking. He wasn’t doing such a good job.
“He was coming out of his office in West Seoul when it happened. The shooter ran off though. We haven’t caught him yet. It looks like it could be linked to some kind of gang rivalry. COC4 is investigating it now. Stay away from Jung for now. I’ll meet you at the office headquarters.”
JaeJoong confirmed his superior’s orders and then hung up the phone. He immediately tried dialing YunHo but the line didn’t connect. He was in the hospital so maybe his phone was off.
JaeJoong walked out of the bathroom and paced around in his living room. He couldn’t get a hold of YunHo but that didn’t necessarily mean something bad happened. Did it? YunHo was okay. He was going to be okay. Jung YunHo was a fighter. He would go visit and search every hospital in Seoul to find the man.
Just as he was about to leave his condo, his phone rang. He saw that the incoming call was from a public telephone.
“Hello?”
No answer.
“YunHo…”
No answer.
“Hello?? Hello?” He was about to hang up when someone on the other side spoke up.
“It’s ChangMin. Are you okay? Is everything all right with you?
“ChangMin? How is YunHo? I heard he was shot. Is he okay?” JaeJoong had a residual panic in his voice. “ChangMin? YunHo? Tell me he is alright.”
ChangMin quickly eased JaeJoong’s fears. “He was hit in the side, barely missing his vital organs. He just got out of surgery.”
“Is he okay? How is he feeling?”
“He is unconscious at the moment but he should be fine. The doctors are waiting for him to wake up.”
“What hospital?”
“Seoul West Medical.”
With his S with ChangMin, JaeJoong felt that he could relax now. “What about the man who did it?”
“We haven’t had any trouble with any groups, so we don’t have a clue as to who the shooter is or what the agenda was.”
“You think it’s JunSu?”
“We haven’t gotten any clues yet. We sent the men out to find out. But I believe it’s a high chance that man was involved. Mr. JaeJoong, the police and other JoPok will be visiting Mr. YunHo. I know you’re concerned about him but... I think it’ll be best if you stayed away for a while. If anything else happens, I’ll call you,” ChangMin said before he hung up.
JaeJoong punched the wall in confusion. The wall had a slight dent from his force. He felt something tingle and looked at his knuckles to see blood dripping. He walked into the kitchen to rinse his hand under the skin and then opened his cupboard to wrap some gauze around his hand.
YunHo had been shot and he so desperately wanted to visit the older man but yet he couldn’t. He knew it couldn’t be helped but that didn’t mean he would accept it. He was upset. Frustrated and more importantly, hurt.
JaeJoong took several deep breaths to calm himself.
***
JaeJoong finished his report in less than an hour. Normally, he would be ridiculed by the older detectives, but today, they looked at him with only compassion. All of the detectives in the room had an S. They were all worried about their own S agents, so they understood and sympathized with JaeJoong’s plight.
On the way home, JaeJoong met up with several of his informants but he didn’t pick up anything useful that night. He couldn’t concentrate. His mind kept drifting off to YunHo. Exhausted, he decided to head home early.
He got off the train. As he walked to his apartment, his cell phone rang. The caller id indicated that it was HeeChul.
He probably wanted to ask about YunHo. JaeJoong pushed the green button to take the call.
“JaeJoong?” HeeChul said, panicked. “Where the hell have you been? You haven’t been picking up your phone.”
“I was on the train, so I lose signal down there sometimes…”
“Where the fuck are you now?” HeeChul was sounding increasingly frustrated now.
“I’m almost home. I just got off the train.”
“No! Wait right there. Do NOT go home. You can’t go home!” HeeChul screamed so loudly that JaeJoong had to move the phone away from his ear. What the hell could have happened?
“You mustn’t go home. I had a call from Geng. He’s too busy right now, so he had me give you a call.”
“From Hyung? What’s going on?”
“Listen to me very carefully. Your place is being watched by the police.”
“What? Again?” JaeJoong sighed.
But what HeeChul said next shocked JaeJoong so much that he couldn’t even sigh. “They’re going to take you in.”
“What?” JaeJoong thought to he must of misheard the other man.
“If you go home now, they’re there waiting to take you in and they’re going to force you to resign. Then they’ll take you to the head office. If you go with them, it’ll be the end of you.”
They were going to take him in for questioning? JaeJoong couldn’t believe it. Nothing he just heard made sense to him.
“Wait. They stopped following me. They didn’t find anything suspicious. I don’t understand what would make them still interested in me.”
“It was a decision by Human Affairs. Someone must have told them something. It was probably a politician that made something as big as this happen.”
“I see,” JaeJoong muttered.
Geng had already warned him. He had said that JunSu used politicians to put pressure on the police and he’d been right.
JunSu had told YooChun that he wasn’t to touch JaeJoong until he had JunSu’s express permission. That was because he was being watched. When the surveillance on JaeJoong stopped, YooChun could do whatever he pleased.
JaeJoong was finally starting to realize just how powerful JunSu actually was. He was an expert in manipulating the police-from the inside.
“I really don’t know what the hell is going on…” HeeChul continued. “Geng gave you direct orders to not be apprehended yet. He’s going to talk to the First Division head and the politician because he doesn’t think they have enough evidence against you. He’s going to do his best to clear your name.”
Geng had found JaeJoong to warn him he was watched. Now he was working to help JaeJoong out of this mess. JaeJoong hadn’t thought that Geng would ever consider his a priority, but he had been so wrong.
JaeJoong clutched the phone. “Thank you for telling me all this, HeeChul.” He hung up and squinted at his house, which was only just in front of him. Parked outside was a car he didn’t recognize.
He turned around and briskly headed in the opposite direction. He flagged down a taxi and asked to go to Seoul.
Geng had gotten HeeChul to pass on the information because he considered it urgent. If JunSu was involved, it wouldn’t matter that they didn’t have enough evidence to take him in. JunSu would use whatever means necessary so he could get his way. It probably wouldn’t even be hard for that man.
JunSu had promised YunHo that he would leave JaeJoong alone. YunHo had trusted him. That was why he’d had sex with JaeJoong in front of JunSu. If JunSu had kept his promise, this wouldn’t be happening. JunSu had tricked YunHo. He had never intended to honor his promise by leaving JaeJoong alone.
JaeJoong seethed with rage. This was a declaration of war. It might as well have been JunSu who pulled the trigger on YunHo.
JaeJoong closed his eyes and leaned back, his mind full of thoughts as the taxi raced on.
What was he going to do now? He could be fired from the police force. Or worse still, he could be slapped with false charges and lose his freedom. Geng was trying to clear his name, but he knew that it wasn’t going to be an easy task.
What did JaeJoong want the most?
What did he have to do?
If this was his lady day, what did he want to do? What did he want to do?
He didn’t have to think about it for very long. He already knew that answer.
JunSu and the police might have been watching so JaeJoong slipped into the hospital through a staff entrance. He quickly entered the staff dressing room and grabbed some scrubs that were sitting on the bench. He heard the shower turn off so he quickly grabbed them and ran into the closest bathroom.
He went to the front desk and noticed that no one was there. He knew that ChangMin had definitely asked for a private room for YunHo’s safety so that meant YunHo’s room was on the top floor. He picked up the clipboard to look for YunHo’s name when someone called him from behind.
“Hey! Who are you?”
JaeJoong’s heart skipped a beat. He turned around to see a large, short woman with her hands on her hips.
“Hi! I’m a new nurse. I think I’m lost.” He smiled, putting on a confused expression.
“Man! Don’t they walk you down to your floors for the first time?”
“Haha! They did…but I got lost.”
“Whatever. Where are you supposed to be stationed?”
“The private rooms, Ma’am.”
“Take the elevator all the way up to the 13th floor.”
“Thank you.” JaeJoong said, as he bowed.
“Beat it, boy.”
JaeJoong bowed again and left while still he could.

JaeJoong took the elevator all the way to the 13th floor and exited the elevator. He looked around. He had a choice of going straight, left, or to his right. Trusting his instincts, he made a left. He walked down the dreary hall to the last door, until he came across the sign reading “Jung Y.” on the door. He opened the door and approached the white bed. YunHo had an IV drip in his arm. He was also sleeping soundly.
Thunder struck, scaring him for a second. Looking out from the room's window, he saw that it has started to rain. The drops of rain slide down the window in a soothing manner.
JaeJoong sat on the chair next to the bed and watched YunHo. He thought to himself that he could watch YunHo sleep for hours. But he couldn’t. There was no time left. He swept YunHo’s hair back and stood up. He was turning to leave when YunHo called out to him.
“JaeJoong? Is that you?” YunHo’s voice was weak.
JaeJoong swung around.
“How long have you been here?” YunHo also sounded drowsy. He had probably been given something for the pain to help him sleep better.
“Just for a few minutes. You were sleeping so soundly, I didn’t want to disturb you. I was going to go home.”
YunHo chuckled a little. “You’re so cold hearted.”
He seemed fine, but he was still pale. JaeJoong had heard that he had lost a lot of blood.
“I’m going to take my leave now. I have a lot of work to do.”
“I see.”
JaeJoong pulled the sheets up over YunHo and tucked him in.
“Are you in any pain?” JaeJoong asked.
“Not really. They have me doped up real good.”
“Get better soon.” JaeJoong smiled gently.
“Of course. I’m Jung YunHo, after all. This time next week, I’ll be back in bed with you.”
JaeJoong’s lips quivered a little. “I’m definitely going to look forward to that,” he said knowing he couldn’t possibly keep his word.
“What happened to your hand?” YunHo asked.
“Huh?”
“Your hand. It’s wrapped up. What happened?”
Even through he was weak and lying in bed, YunHo never failed to miss anything about JaeJoong. At that thought, JaeJoong’s eyes began to tear but he somehow managed to hold them back. He knew YunHo would get worried if he saw them and that was the last thing he wanted to do to the older man, given his current state.
“Oh, I just had an accident. Nothing major.”
YunHo grabbed JaeJoong’s hand with difficulty and brought it to lips to give it a kiss.
“Are you in pain?” YunHo said with a teasing smile.
“Not anymore, I’m not.” JaeJoong said with a smile.
He bent over and kissed YunHo.
This might be their last kiss. JaeJoong felt a pang in his heart. It hurt JaeJoong just thinking about it. But there was no way he would let YunHo know.
“Bye.” JaeJoong stooped up and headed back to the door.
YunHo called him back. “JaeJoong.”
JaeJoong turned once more.
YunHo had a serious expression on his face. “Don’t forget what I told you. On the pier…”
JaeJoong remembered: “You can ask for my help anytime you want. You’re never ever alone.”
There was no way YunHo could know what he was planning, but sometimes JaeJoong sensed that YunHo could see right through him.
He nodded, but there was nothing he could do. He knew that YunHo would consider what he was about to do as a betrayal. He knew his lover would be angry and that was something YunHo’s current state couldn’t handle.
But still, JaeJoong had to go. He had to leave. He had to be alone.
Yet he knew that no matter where he was, he would be thinking only of YunHo.
He came back to bed and hugged YunHo. He kissed the older man more passionately this time. His tongue slipped inside of YunHo’s mouth.
Only a short time passed, but for JaeJoong it felt like an eternity.
YunHo reached out to pull JaeJoong close, but JaeJoong quickly moved away.
“JaeJoong…?”
“I’m not alone. I’ll always be thinking of you. It’s going to be alright. I’ll be alright.” JaeJoong said that to convince himself as much as he did YunHo.
YunHo looked concerned and sat up. “What are you planning? What are you going to do?”
JaeJoong could see that YunHo was in pain. He reached behind him and grasped the doorknob.
“JaeJoong, wait.” YunHo was grimacing in pain, but he still tried to get out of bed.
JaeJoong shook his head. “Stay there. I have to do something. Don’t you dare look at me like that. We’ll see each other soon, okay? I’ll come back to you.”
“JaeJoong…don’t,” YunHo said, stopping to take a deep breath.
“Don’t go.” YunHo reached out to him.
JaeJoong smiled. “Wait for me, YunHo yah.” He opened the door and stepped into the corridor. Then he broke into a run.
“JAEJOONG!”
“JAEJOONG! COME BACK!”
“PLEASE!”
He could hear YunHo calling for him. He so desperately wanted to turn around, but he couldn’t. His tears were blurring his vision but he just wiped them away with the back of hand. His tears soaked through the gauze and he could feel the salt from his tears, sting his wounds. He took the elevator down to the main floor. Still hearing YunHo’s voice in his head, he stepped out into the night, the cold air hitting his face. He didn’t feel any pain, for the pain in his heart was far more greater.
A/N#1: *Hides behind YunJae* Sorry for the long wait guys. How long has it been, three months now? Sorry but my muse just wasn't coming to me. It also didn't help that all these so called "fans" saying they hate JYJ/HoMin/certain member without a damn good reason or picking sides is just getting on my damn nerves. It's like grow the hell up!
A/N#2: Anyways, how was the final chapter? Good? Bad? Who do you think did it? Don't be to quick to point fingers. You might be surprised at who the real culprit is.
A/N#3: I started Chapter 1 of Volume 4 so hopefully my muse decides to stick around. Dropping comments always help with that too so don't forget to comment.
A/N#4: YOUTUBE and LJ don't like me for some reason so I had to post the song via youtube. Did you guys like it?
