I think most people who read this journal have already figured it out, but the cat is officially out of the bag - I'm pregnant! The little one is due on May 19, 2009, and s/he is apparently currently the size of a fig. For those uninitiated, it has become common practice to compare the approximate size of a fetus in each week of the pregnancy to a particular food of about the same size and weight. I find this hilarious and have enjoyed thinking of the lil guy as a lentil, kidney bean, grape, kumquat, and various other things. At the moment s/he is a fig. Next week s/he will be a lime!
I'm eagerly awaiting hearing the heartbeat at our next appointment in November. We're seeing a practice of certified nurse-midwives at a birth center in Alexandria, and so far I just love them. At my first appointment, a midwife named Marsha handed me a mirror and asked if I wanted to see my cervix. I was kind of disturbed, but went along with it and said sure, and it was actually quite amazing to finally see what it looks like! Things got even crazier when she turned to Brian and asked him if he wanted to see it too! For a second, I was petrified, thinking Brian was never going to want to have sex with me again. But he peeked in and thought it was pretty cool too! The whole thing was HYSTERICAL!
As long as everything stays healthy and normal, I will most likely deliver at their birth center, and we'll get to bring our baby home with us that very night! Otherwise, I will be referred out to a Dr. Tchabo at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, who is also supposed to be pretty good. I'll be touring that hospital before the birth so that we're comfortable with it in the event that that's where we end up.
At the same time, my sister is actually pregnant too - and due on my birthday, December 19! We're throwing her a shower at her place (outside Philly) this Saturday. It's been really fun and sweet so far, being able to bond with her through this process, and knowing our children will be close in age and grow up together. I also have the added benefit of using all her baby gear once she's done with it, saving us lots of money and time spent bargain hunting!
Well, that's my brief update for now. Gotta wrap up work stuff and go home. Woo!
