over the river and through the woods

I haven't actually gone out to embrace nature for a while. This fact was made clear to me when I took the children to Claude Moore Park on the nature walk. We went to their trails that are open to the public, and I pretty much led them around and pointed out various interesting sights, such as lambs ears, flowering dogwoods, wild violets, and cedar trees with peeling bark. (I got sent to go on this field trip along with the other teacher who I strongly suspect doesn't like kids, doesn't like talking to kids, and definitely doesn't know anything about nature. So, this was fun.) Be that as it may, the kids had a splendid time and spent the entire journey happily pointing out things like logs, ponds, possible animal holes, giant tree trunks, and deer footprints.

Their enthusiasm for the forest made me remember when I was a short person and my dad and paternal grandmother used to take me out for nature walks and talk to me about the flowers and trees and animals I'd find on the way. I've always been very fond of nature and especially forests, which were always a special place for me growing up. I was a fairly solitary, adventurous child, and I loved exploring the woods around my house, playing in the creek and catching crayfish, building fairy houses out of sticks and moss and acorn cups, and climbing anything I could manage to.

That said, I should probably get out and start nature walking on my own sometime. We live within actual walking distance of a park near the Potomac river, and then there is of course the one I took the kids to today, which has better trails but more people.

Meanwhile, take this meme that has been floating around lately:

Give me a character and I will tell you:

* How I FEEEEEL about this character
* All the people I ship romantically with this character
* My non-romantic OTP for this character
* My unpopular opinion about this character
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
