So, Nicole pounced on me the instant I set foot in the house this afternoon and compelled me to watch Glee, the TV show that has been getting shaky reviews from my friendslist. And, god help me, I actually liked it. Or at least this episode, which may or may not be representative of the entire series so far.
-Okay, the music. I like that it's about a glee club and the whole show is jam-packed with songs. They're not the best remixes of the songs, but they're not horrible, and they almost always fit perfectly. In this episode, we had a student crushing hard on her hot teacher, and the point of that day's lesson was to sing ballads to express their feelings. So she sang a epic love song to him in the most hilarious scene ever where her face was contorted in ecstasy and his face was contorted in horror. He came back later to let her down lightly by singing a blended version of 'Don't Stand So Close to Me' and 'Young Girl'. ("I understand! I'm young and you find it hard to stand close to me!") The teenage 'father' of his girlfriend's baby sings 'I'll Stand By You' to the baby's sonogram in a hilarious scene, and his mom walks in on him and is all: "WTF whut are you doing?" O_o "Are you singing to a sonogram?" The music is great.
-The ladies. I love the ladies. Granted, the episode seemed pretty centric on two specific ones, so I didn't get much of a look at the others, but I liked how Rachel's crush on the teacher ended up. They had this girl who was stalking the teacher two years before and had ended up taking the hottest pepper in the world after being rejected (I kid you not), and during this episode, she made vague 'threats' to Rachel. Things like: "Give it up, you're going to end up getting hurt." And I was rolling my eyes, because I thought I knew what was coming a mile away- freaky stalker attacks more innocent crush, teacher saves crush and talks to her, girls learn error of their ways or get dragged off to counseling.
But, NO. Instead, Susie (the other girl) corners Rachel in a bathroom and goes: "LOOK BITCH YOU NEED TO GET SOME SELF ESTEEM BECAUSE I'VE BEEN HERE AND IT DOESN'T END WELL. STOP PROJECTING YOUR ISSUES ON OTHERS AND GET INTO THE HOT, SINGLE GROOVE AND BY THE WAY, DID I MENTION HOW AWESOME I AM?"
And my jaw DROPS. Because....YESSSSSS. WIN.
Also, Mercedes pwning the moody Puck after he revealed that he's the father of the teenage mom and not the other guy at all? Awesome. She gets in his face and is like: "YOU FUCKED HER ONCE BUT THOSE TWO ARE IN LOVE AND SHE WANTS AND NEEDS STABILITY YOU CAN'T GIVE HER. YOU BETTER BACK OFF, YOU OWE HER AT LEAST THAT." Way to be, chica.
Hell, this whole episode was chock full of girls standing up for themselves in various ways, and I loved it.
-I liked the head of the celibacy club, despite my inability to remember his name. He's so cute and sensitive and responsible. He's this typical high school 'guy', but he's very emotionally mature and without most of the homophobia and masculinity issues we tend to see in jerks- er, guys that age. He spends this episode fretting about his dead father and trying on his dad's suits in a scene reminiscent of a little girl putting on mommy's make-up, and angsting over whether he has what it takes to be a good, supportive father to the baby. I loved the scene where his mom sees him singing to the sonogram, and she comes over and sits by him and looks shellshocked, and he starts crying and they have this big, loving, mom-and-son hug.
-WHICH IS IN DIRECT CONTRAST TO THE DOUCHEBAGGERY THAT IS QUINN'S MOM AND DAD.
-OH GOD I HATE THEM.
-But I did like how Quinn behaved during the whole, horrible thing. Sure, she was crying and upset, but she was still standing up for herself and trying to get her dad to see that she was still his daughter and now a young woman.
-God, I hate that dad. He needs to die.
-I think he's on the list with Gendo Ikari as far as worst dads ever. Spirit looks like a saint next to him.
-I did like the scene, because it's wrenching and angsty and realistic because some families are douches like that, but man, do I want to wring parental neck in that scene. Props to boyfriend's mom for being cool about everything and taking Quinn in.
-I didn't like the gay guy. I think I would have liked him more if he didn't keep trying to fuck up the father's relationship with his pregnant girlfriend. The gay kid has a big crush on him, and he spent the episode trying to convince him that all of his problems have to do with girls, girls are the problem, stay away from girls. All of which doesn't endear me to the character at all, and kind of makes me want to stab him in the eye. It doesn't help that he knows the guy is under a lot of stress, but is still trying to stay with his girlfriend and be the best, most supportive boyfriend in all the land...but the little ass keeps on trying to manipulate him anyway. Way to be thoughtful.
-I hated the baby's real daddy, and I hope he dies in a fire. He barely spoke in this episode, but everything about him screams swaggering, insecure, aggressive, sullen teenage macho boy. And I hate him on sight. Maybe he's not as bad I think he is? I mean, he only spoke a few lines.
...
All of which boiled down to "WAH WAH WAH ME WAH ME WAH ME ME ME."
Never mind.
I might just watch another episode, if the goods keep on outweighing the bads. Still, I've been burned before, so I'm not going to get too hopeful.
