For dinner, I bought myself some sushi and a mango/pineapple/yogurt smoothie yesterday as a reward for all the insanity I had to deal with on my week back from Belgium. I think I could eat an entire tray of unagi sushi all by itself. But only the sushi, for some reason. I've eaten unagi-don and just plain unagi, but I like the sushi form the best. Maybe because there is an equal distribution of rice to meat? (Unagi, for the uninitiated, is freshwater eel. It's also supposed to be very helpful for increasing stamina, but I doubt I get that benefit from one sushi.) I think my ideal sushi tray would have one half unagi nigiri, one half salmon nigiri, and a row of the truly awesome California rolls this restaurant makes.
I might try to make sushi at some point, if I can get my hands on some rice vinegar. I'm thinking of making
temari sushi, for starters. It looks easy enough, and the sushi itself looks supremely cute.
And I know I should be delighted about the team from Kumogakure coming back in, especially since the ladies look sooo damn badass. And it's y'know, a team of two ladies and one dude, which is also pretty sweet. I like how demanding this one is: "If you have time to cry, you have time to TELL US ABOUT MY FRIEND'S MURDERER ASDFGHJKL." However, the awesome is kind of dulled in the light of bullshit that is sure to come in with this new Sasuke arc.
-Sasuke continues to be very, very easily led, despite his claims that he is following his own path. And if he is aware of Tobi/Madara's manipulations, he doesn't seem to show it. I think the kid would be a pretty good soldier, actually, with his 'follow blindly for ideal' trait. I wonder if that is genetic to the Uchiha. I don't think I can really hate Sasuke at this point, because I've detached myself enough from the manga to just feel apathy towards him.
I do like Team Hawk, though. Karin's annoyance at having to totally change directions: 'this looks like it's going to be a pain in the ass' is great. Only you, Karin, would think that charging into a meeting of the highest-level ninjas from all the assorted ninja lands in order to assassainate one of them should be classified as 'a pain in the ass'. Also, I hear that the scanlator mistranslated Sasuke's declaration of war. It should be 'kill the Hokage,' not 'kill all the Kages'. Which, honestly, makes quite a bit more sense.
-During the discussion over whether or not Sasuke would kill Kakashi, it was brought up that Kishimoto wouldn't let Sasuke actually kill someone. Which makes me think: "Holy shit. Was the entire Pain arc a clever ploy to keep Sasuke from actually destroying Konoha and getting his hands dirty? Knowing Kishimoto, I can believe it.
- I don't have a problem with Sakura crying. The girl's had a long day, and it looks like the boy she's been trying to save for years has taken a turn for the evil. I DO have a problem with fucking Naruto saying 'leave this to me', and the plot leaving her the hell behind AGAIN. No. No, die in a fire. If this is the way it continues, and the final battle once again has Naruto promising to bring back Sasuke, so sweet little Sakura can just stay at home and wait, I will spontaneously combust from fury.
-Aaaand Gaara's back. I do like Gaara, and the Sand sibs, very much. Carry on. (I am hoping, hoping hoping, that Konan shows up as the Amekage. PLEEEASE.)
More seriously, links:
This is a well-written essay on race and ethnicity in Avatar, the series, as opposed to Avatar, the live-action movie. Even if you're not in the fandom, you should read it, as an example of what Hollywood's whitewashing does.
This is a petition for Lt Dan Choi. Lt. Dan Choi, from Orange County, California, is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and an Iraq War veteran. On Tuesday, he will face a panel of colonels who will decide whether or not to fire him -- to discharge him from the military for "moral and professional dereliction" under the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Please sign the petition to help him fight this policy, and make them aware that there are many people who support this man and other people like him.
