The Monster in the Man
The last time I saw you, you were telling me lies
That was the last time and there were no good-byes.
We were already done, no path back to the past
You ruined a child’s innocence and made your getaway fast.
Later when we knew the truth, it killed the soul in the child
She never recovered, she has never said good-bye.
She just wants to forget, so I remember in her place
If I got the chance again - I’d wipe that smile from your face.
Inside I die a little knowing that I loved you and couldn’t see
What you were doing to her and what she couldn’t tell me.
Because I once loved you, even though I wish it weren’t so
For the sake of all the good times, I let you live and let you go.
But what you did to her, you did to others later
And now the woman in her mirror has reason to hate her.
She could have stopped their pain - could have stopped you in your tracks
No matter now tears fall like rain, she knows she can’t go back.
We can’t turn back time for you, we can’t make everything alright.
You did this to her, to us, how could you not expect a fight?
You want to know what love is? I’m going to show you.
I’m going to continue to act like you’re nothing and I don’t know you.
That’s the only way it’s possible, that’s the only road to take
You get to live your life, I get to see her heartbreak
Perhaps you will learn to be human, and not a monster in a looker’s clothes;
Perhaps you will find healing, some mortar for those holes.
Because sometime, somewhere, someone else did what you did - but to you
You would not be walking this earth, if I didn’t know that to be true.
Call it crazy or compassion - I’m not hung up on the name
But you blew our world apart long ago and we were never the same.
Does it make you feel like a man to know I can’t forget?
Would it make you human, if I knew you felt …regret?
But you don’t regret a thing and claim you did no wrong.
But it’s a pattern see - you abusers all sing the same song.
I heard you confess a million times though I didn’t understand.
You were telling me all the things you’d done, like trophies on a stand.
I’d known you most of my life, and I still can’t comprehend.
I only saw the husband, I didn’t see the monster in the man.
