I finally talked to the principal at 8:15 last night! Oi!! He was calling to offer me an interview for a long-term sub job in his building!!
I subbed at this school on Friday the 17th. It was a kindergarten class (1/2 day program). The PM class is QUITE rambunctious and in serious need of some structure and discipline. The AM class was better, but still not great. Anyway, the teacher just moved down to K this year from 4th. She was there on the first day of school. Then she had to go to her doctor for an issue with her eye. She apparently needed 2 or 3 days off for that, so a sub request was just put in to the general sub system. Then it turned out that she needed to have eye surgery and be out for a week. I think they got someone else for that. Then she had complications from the surgery and needed another 2 weeks. A long term sub was put in there. The day that I subbed was one day when the long-term couldn't be there. So now the teacher has found out that she needs another 3 - 5 weeks. Apparently the sub they have in there now does not want the job. (The principal said, "She didn't sign up for the job for that long.") This is the principal's first year in the district (unless he used to be a teacher somewhere, I'm not sure, but he's a new principal to the school) so he e-mailed the other district principals, explained his situation and asked if they knew of any subs who would be good for the job. And my name was recommended. :-D He's interviewing 3 people on Friday and the job will start on Monday. He first asked me about my schedule on Thursday and I told him that I was working all day, but I could cancel it if I needed to. Then he asked me about Friday and I was free all day. It's really nice that he's working around my schedule.
I'm excited at being offered a chance at a long-term position. It's funny to me that this district interviews long-term subs and doesn't just enter someone's name into the sub system with all the dates. Maybe they pay more or something. So I'm aware that if I get this job, it's going to be quite a chore to take over that room. But coming from my former district where I once had to teach a pair of twins that it was not appropriate to walk on top of tables, I think I can handle it. I'm excited at the thought of teaching kindergarten again, but also worried that they'll try to have me do things in a way that doesn't work for me. We'll see. Plus I have other sub jobs lined up (3 - 4 days a week) through the last week in October that I would have to cancel which I feel really bad about. I asked my mom if she thought I should say something to the school I'm subbing in about the possibility of this long-term coming my way and the need to re-schedule all those jobs. But she said that I should wait until I find out if I even have the job as there is no point in worrying them for nothing. But if they're not interviewing until Friday and the job starts Monday, I'll have to get ahold of someone over the weekend someone to explain the situation and why I can't be there on Monday. I guess we'll see what happens.
Time to go update and brush off the portfolio that no one ever looks at...
Oh yeah... my mom finally found out what her problem is. She has a burst disc that has lodged itself into her spine. I was with her last week at the doctor when he showed us the MRI and x-ray. You know how vertebrae are all stacked and in line with each other? One of my mom's lower vertebrae is so far off that it's edge is lined up in the middle of the two around it. You know what I mean? So she's going in on Friday for back surgery. The doctor is going to insert pins and fuse the bones back together. She's a nervous wreck, of course, but hopefully this will solve her problem.
