The Love for The Reds and The Reds

The National Stadium was flooded in a sea of Reds yesterday evening, and it was not the preview show of this year’s NDP. Singaporeans from all walks of life were donned in all the different Liverpool jerseys, polos, tshirts, training tees that you could ever imagined. Giving a mathematical ratio of the support for the Lions vs the Reds would be something like 1:5000. And I am not exaggerating. For instance, many of the miniature Singapore flags that were given out ended up in the bin or strewn onto the floor while fans rushed to grab the free KOP scarf.

I could understand why our national team players were disappointed in the lack of support for them during the intl' friendly. It was our home ground - the National Stadium, which last night, was converted into ‘Anfield’. I must say, I enjoyed the atmosphere of the chanting, singing and cheering. It was the closest I could get to the real Anfield. I even got a little emotional when “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was played”. However, I did not like how some fans ridicule the local boys - jeering them when they took their time to retrieve the balls, giving them half-hearted applause upon their appearance and making awfully loud snide remarks during the entire match.

I love my Club. While I might not be considered a die-hard fan that lives and breathes Liverpool (I saw the papers the other day, and a fan actually tattooed the Club’s logo and its achievements on his back!), I will definitely support them in times of lousy transfers to them lifting the league/championships trophies. Even the most die-hard fan would have to agree that the Lions did well, especially for the first half where they held on to a 1-0 score line. Their lack of fitness was obvious in the last 30mins, but they sure fought hard, and I feel we ought to give them credits for that.

Who says you always have to choose your love? For yesterday, we showed that we could love Singapore as much as our favourite club.
