Breathing was not a necessity within the Lifestream. Thinking was all one really needed, that was voice, movement, and anything in between. Breathing was what the living did. Aerith didn't know much about science, but the fact that she felt the need to breathe told her that something was amiss ( ... )

Zack would have imagined his own reincarnation to be something a lot more interesting. A spectacle. An event. Really cool. But, as fate would have it, that was not destined to be the case.

Sputtering desperately for air as he burst out of the water, confused, sopping, and looking monumentally pitiful, Zack didn't have the presence of mind to assess this incredible understatement of a resurrection. If he ever chose to reflect on the rebirth at a later date, he'd likely figure it really hadn't lived up to his unreasonably high expectations in the least. For the moment, however, he was much too busy trying to remember how he was supposed to breathe in the midst of this sensory overload ( ... )

It remained silently standing at the edge of the pool waiting patiently for those to come back to life. Shifting its hind legs in closer, the dark creature sat itself down on the floorboards as the first one broke the surface followed closely by the second. Under the soft morning light, the damp scales adorning its body almost seemed to glitter as it remained virtually motionless. Softly glowing red eyes hinted at the intelligence behind them as the dragon’s attention flickered over to regard the Cetra as they stumbled a few steps back out of fear. It made no move on either of them, and instead, kept its gaze fixated solely on the female ( ... )

Aerith's gaze broke away from the beast the moment she felt movement next to her. "Za... Zack!" She sounded as pitiful as he looked. It struck her as incredibly odd that the dark haired man was physically present with her. They hadn't been actually next to each other in so many years ( ... )

Zack winced when the dragon let out a last, fleeting roar, but it was already on its way to wherever. Apparently it hadn't really been all that interested in toying with him while he tried to put up a fight in this state, as he even made a sorry show of something so simple as walking.

Stumbling toward the ledge where Aerith was still hanging on, he tried to turn his expression to anything that wasn't plain awe. First in response to the fact that the enormous beast hadn't so much as batted at the two of them with a claw, and then because it had left them alive and they were alive. He could feel her hand on his arm and the broken, wooden floorboards digging into his side, and he could hear the distant sounds of others, real people. They were actually, honestly alive, and for just a bare instant, Zack was nearly ecstatic ( ... )

The silence left in the wake of the creature was strange yet familiar, and Aerith was almost afraid to speak. Time didn't seem to pass within the church, and she was glad that it still remained very much as it had been when she was younger. Her expression gradually relaxed. She and Zack were alive. Alive, confused, and cold from the water surrounded by the flowers Aerith had tended long ago. It didn't seem real ( ... )

He chuckled slightly, but the laughter only sent him into another coughing fit. Turning away with a hand clasped over his mouth, Zack closed his eyes for a minute, hoping they would better adjust for the fleeting respite. He surprised himself by expecting to see nothing but flowing, luminescent green everywhere around when he opened them up again.

Even now, he couldn't quite believe it was that easy, that quick. There were more important things to think about, though; he had said so, himself.

While Aerith tried to hoist herself up out of the little pond they'd gotten themselves stuck in, Zack stood up patiently just behind her. He held his arms out, just in case she tumbled back and couldn't quite catch herself. But even holding up his own hands took an effort, now, and he wasn't sure whether he really would be able to do her any good, in the end.

"No way," he answered, shaking his head and offering her an arm. "Ladies first. Let's try it this way, okay? I'll give you a hand up."
