The library was quiet today. Middle of the week, middle of the day. The lady receptionist was sitting behind her desk quietly, reading her book. It was a nice, thick book too. She thought that it, along with the fake glasses and turtle neck, made her look rather nerdy...not to say that she wasn't also making the get up attractive. That was the whole aim after all. She kept a steady eye on one of the young men that had come in earlier.
She hadn't even bothered to turn the page, watching him pick out his book from the shelves nearby, sitting down, and reading. She picked him for the nerdy type, but then she would have expected that.
But he wasn't bad to look at. Not at all.
Maybe he would be a good one to try her new perfume on? The lady said it would work wonders.
She was so enthralled that she did not notice the tall figure standing at the reception desk until he cleared his throat.
"Grrrahem...."
The receptionist started. The voice was astoundingly gruff and deep. The look of the man was also very odd. He wore a large cloak, black, closed tight with a simple metal clasp, and with an exceedingly deep hood. It was so deep she could not even see his chin or neck, it was just a blackness and a hint of movement in the dark hood that indicated something was inhabiting the cloak.
"Umm, yes. Welcome to Edge Public Library. How can I help you?" The voice that followed her stunned greeting was strange. It sounded more like a sustained growl than a proper voice.
"I am looking for the history section, in particular ancient history concerning the Cosmo area." The directness of the statement made the receptionist a little uncomfortable. Most of the people that frequented the library were quiet and very polite, some even going out of their way to make a little small talk. This guy seemed all business.
"Uhh, yes. Please, step this way, sir." She motioned nervously for the man to follow her. As they walked, she noticed his gait was particularly awkward. He waddled a little, as if he was a toddler. The receptionist began to imagine who on earth was beneath the cloak. Some bum off the street? Some stranger from the rural Chocobo area? A foreigner? Or maybe...
She turned forward abruptly and straightened up, trying not to meet his gaze. What if he was a hoodlum or a robber or a murderer? Did people rob libraries? Maybe they were guns in his cloak that made his walk so awkwardly? She could just imagine herself, face down on the ground with the cloaked man, unveiled as a brutish, ugly prison-escapee/con/thief/murderer, her face buried amongst authors and researchers, with the young man next to her, calming and reassuring her, his big beautiful eyes staring into hers as the...
"Grrrahem...."
She popped out of the dream world and saw that she was in the history section. "Oh, um right. Here we are, sir. There are the books concerning Cosmo Canyon and the surrounding areas. There are also some, ummm, more general histories of the world over here." She watched as the figure scrutinised the books, not yet reaching out to take one, just reading the spines.
"Are these what you are looking for?" All the nervous receptionist got in reply was a grunt a very slight nod. With her job done and no one robbed, she moved as quickly and as inconspicuously away from the man as she could, which was to say highly conspicuous, the figure watching her flee all the way back to the reception desk. He then looked around to see if anyone else could see him. Finding himself alone, his cloak extended slowly, making sure not to reveal the appendages beneath and selected a book from the shelves. Taking it, and dropping it on the ground, the figure knelt and began to read.
"History of Cosmo Canyon: Wild Beasts, Early Man, and the Ancients"
