What: A simple walk home turns into much more.
Aurelius stepped down from the curb to cross the street, her silver loops swinging from side-to-side as she looked both ways. The traffic had stopped to allow her to cross along with a small group of people, all of them minding their own business. That was the way of it in the upper sectors, especially the busy ones.
Stepping up, she continued on her way, leaving behind most of the people she had originally crossed the street with. They were going to their cars probably, but she had to go all the way down to the lower sectors to join in the food line to feed the lost, the hungry, the people down on their luck. It was all she could do to help their suffering. The nights seemed particularly lonely for some, but sometimes the most active for others.
Her journey was a long one, but she found herself pausing before heading down the street that would lead her to another sector at the sound of a child crying. She was cautious enough to know that danger could be down the street from her, but the wail of a frightened child drew her anyway.
She found the little girl huddled at the side of a dumpster. The girl couldn’t have been more than seven years old, hidden deep in a darker alleyway. As she moved to where the child was, she came to a halt at the sight of dark liquid on the ground, following it to beyond the garbage receptacle. She heard the hissing and slap on flesh-on-flesh without even having to go to the other side.
Instead of moving to investigate, she knelt beside the child and shushed the little girl quiet. It took a moment for the child to realize that she was here as protection. She tried to pull the child to her chest so it would be much easier to lift the girl and move her from the dumpster.
The mad wet slap of flesh from the other side of the dumpster grew louder. She swore she heard flesh hit down against the hard cement ground.
The little girl screamed suddenly, clinging to her. The poor thing was terrified, and Aurelius was about to lift the girl and move her when words just started to spill from the little one’s mouth. “Mommy! Mommy’s hurting him,” came the wail. “She chased us from home and was snarling and saying mean things… she made him cry.”
The sound of the hissing and muttering came to an end at the girl’s frantic cries. There was the sound of clothing scraping against cement before heavy, almost labored footfalls seemed to drag themselves to the source of the sound.
Aurelius grasped the child to her chest as she found eyes that blazed with light come around the side of the dumpster. It was a woman covered almost head-to-toe in blood, hands flexing around the hammer she held in one, and those glowing eyes focused down on her after a moment.
“…my Emelia… you can’t have her… she’s my girl… thief…” the woman rasped with an insane edge to her voice. The movements were jagged yet had some fluid speed as the hammer swung out, the side of it catching Aurelius’ face. “THIEF!!!!”
Blood and bruising were already forming on her cheek as she leapt desperately to the side, still holding the little weeping girl to her chest. She felt the whiz of the hammer as she ducked, dragging herself and the child back as the woman screamed in insane fury and charged.
