Six months previous

Piper

It has been six months since he has been home. I have lost count of all the minutes, all the milestones that he had missed. Chris was crawling now and every morning when he woke up he made this little gurgle noise in the back of his throat. His way of saying “Mommy come and get me.” He smells like talcum powder. I could hold him for days and inhale his baby scent. He most resembled me. Big brown eyes and unruly brown hair. Unfortunately at eight months, he already had a comb over.

Wyatt was a mini Leo. Dirty blond hair and a frown that made him look identical to Leo. That’s the face Wyatt mostly wore - a frown with maybe a pout thrown in for a change. One minute he is my quiet little man wanting to cuddle on the lounge or sleep in my bed, the next he is howling and throwing things at whoever was in his path.

Like now.  I had the groceries loaded into the car, Chris strapped into his car seat but Wyatt was fighting me. Slapping my hands as I tried to buckle him in, making what only could be described as animal noises as I came near him. I gave him the “mommies not playing” look but it didn’t work.

“Need a hand?”

I pulled my head out of the car, smacking it on the roof as I went. Rubbing my throbbing head, I turned to see who the voice belonged to.

Greg. The fireman I once dated when Leo was playing Elder. It must have been a year or so since I had seen him. He was pre - Chris.

“I’m fine. Really.” I said, giving him a quick smile, hoping that would send him on his way. I was in no mood for romance. After all I was still Leo’s wife. Even though I hadn’t seen or heard from him for months. I just had to turn around and look back in the car to see my reason.

“Here.” He said. Stepping in front of me and poking his head in the car. Wyatt stopped howling and two seconds later he was buckled in his seat.

“You seem to have another baby.” Greg said, appearing again in front of me.

“Yeah, that’s Chris. He’s mine and Leos.” I gave as an explanation. He didn’t need to know about the night of passion on a ghostly plane.

“So are you and Leo…” He trailed off.

“It’s complicated.” I stopped him before he got any further.

I faked a look at my watch. “Look at the time, I have so much to do.” Granted it was just loads of laundry but I wasn’t about to tell him that either.

I bid him a hasty goodbye and climbed into the front seat, trying to ignore the fact he was still staring after me. I started the engine and looked into the review mirror. I saw Wyatt looking back at me. It was like I was looking at Leo. His eyes told me that there was something strange about Greg. Just like his fathers eyes would.

Leo

I orbed into the boys room. They were sound asleep. Deep breaths that could ruffle angel feathers escaped their lips. Wyatt hugged his stuff bear close to his chest. His face was buried into the softness of the pillow.

Chris lay on his back, arms outstretched with his tiny little hands balled into small fists. I could see his eyes moving behind his closed eyelids. He had Pipers eyes…the colour of chocolate, so deep and full of love.
I heard the bathroom door open, followed by footsteps padding down the hallway. I knew I should have orbed out of the room but I just had to get a glimpse of her. Just a small glimpse to remind myself of why I was fighting.

Piper

I knew he was there. I could sense him. No matter how long he had been away I always knew him. I crept into the nursery. I looked around the darkroom and couldn’t see him. I knew he was here though.

“Leo.” I said softly.

He appeared out from behind the cupboard. He stood there in front of me looking exactly the same. His broad shoulders that I often rested my head on. His large hands that often held mine. His green eyes looking past my physical presence and into my soul. It was all him and it was all standing in front of me. But it was like I was in the room with a stranger.
