I sat at the kitchen table, sipping my coffee and enjoying my look at the morning paper. Across from me my wife sat sipping her tea and reading the catalogues that fell out of the paper.

“They’ve got dinner sets on sale. We could do with a new set.” She murmured, breaking the silence. I gave a non committal moan, not want to lose the nice quiet Sunday morning I was enjoying. Picking up on it Natalie took another sip of her tea and went back to the glossy pages.

Then I heard it. A scream. It shattered the lazy Sunday morning like a bomb exploding. The scream filled the air once more. I dropped my coffee mug back onto the table when I realised where it was coming from and from whom.

“Penny!” Natalie cried. Her cup hit the saucer and she was up and running. I untangled my long legs from the chair and took after Natalie down the hallway towards the screams. My good was she hurt? Did she fall and cut her head open? Was she bleeding? My chest tightened as I ran. The hallway seemed so long.

I reached the playroom before Natalie and dove onto the floor and scooped Penny up off the floor. Ezra was standing there with a toy guitar in his hand and a furious look on his face.

“Is she alright?” Natalie asked frantically. I was brushing her hair away from her forehead, checking for cuts or bruises. She was squirming in my arms, trying to get away from me.

“We were just playing Dad.” Ezra stated. They may just be playing but sometimes musical instruments could be used as weapons. Just ask our little sisters when they were on the receiving end of one of Zacs drumsticks.

“If you were just playing why was she was screaming like that?” I asked him, putting on my stern voice. I set a wiggling Penny back on the floor after finding no evidence of broken bones.

Ezra sighed. A sigh that suggested I was the stupid one in the room. “We were playing rockstar.” He stated.

“That doesn’t tell me why she was screaming.”

“Because that’s what girls do at your concerts.”

I didn’t need to turn to look back at Natalie to know that she was trying to hold back a laugh.

He was right.

“Daddy.”

I moaned and rolled over. Maybe it’ll go away.

“Daddy.”

I opened my eyes just a crack. She stood there in her pink pyjamas. Blond hair was tussled from restless sleep. In her arms she clutched a worn out brown bear.

“There’s a monster in my room.” She whispered as if she was scared that it would over hear her.

She didn’t need to say anything more. I pulled back the covers and let her crawl in beside me. She nestled down, burying her head into my chest. Mommy can fix everything else but when it came to monsters, no one can protect her like Daddy.
