My latest horoscope said, "Agreeable Libras finally get the cojones to say no to working on weekends or hosting another out-of-town guest. 'Me' time is in order the next three weeks. Your health and sanity are too important." I have had someone staying at my apartment every night this week. Thank you US Weekly for your frighteningly precise horoscopes (and for your celebrity gossip).
This Sunday morning I woke up early and started my day of "Me" time. I went to Milk and Honey to get a coffee, and I began being bombarded by text messages from this boy asking me to go to lunch. No big deal. I said I had plans, and when he asked me to dinner, I said I had REALLY BIG plans. My "Me" time was already in jeopardy. So I went to the park and started reading on a bench, but I realized that it was actually not warm enough to sit outside and read. Silly Kevin. I went to Walgreens (my favorite place in the world), and immediately thought, what can I get Jackie? I got her a puzzle with horses on it. Then, when the sun came out, and it was warm enough to walk around, I got a phone call from my parents. My plans for "Me" time had become "Me being alone but thinking about everyone else" time.
However, this all changed when I went to Myopic Books. I found Musil's "Young Torless" to read, sat down on the couch, and fell in love. Not with the book.
It seemed like he had been following me throughout the book store, darting behind shelves when I would look at him. He had long brown hair with some dirty blond thrown in there. While sitting on the couch, he worked up the nerve to sit down next to me. I smiled at him and said, "Hi", and he moved closer. His name was Lenny, and when he started rubbing my belly on the couch, I knew it was love.
Oh, did I mention Lenny is a brown tabby cat that lives in Myopic? Minor detail.
But in Myopic Books, where no cell phones are allowed, where the floors are attached to the walls with giant book cases, and the only noise you hear is the sliding of books on and off the shelves by the hands of eager readers, I was able to find my "Me" time.
Lenny sprawled out on my lap and I read for hours.
