Life in general
The new job is going well. I've taken on so much new information over the past couple of days that my brain aches! I have actual work to do too, rather than make work, which makes a huge difference when you're a new starter, but it is all rather daunting at the moment as this isn't easy stuff. Of course, that's exactly what I want from a job, otherwise I get bored and leave, and it's very encouraging that the pieces of work I have at the moment would require some hard thinking even if I'd been here years.
Met up with the Champagne Set on Monday for food and drinks in The Driver, which is a nice little pub near Kings Cross. It's further up the road than I was expecting - I was just about to phone
cookwitch to ask her to double check the address on LJ for me when I found it! I was very tempted by their fish & chips but held back as I knew I'd be eating fush & chups (do you like my New Zealand accent there?) on Thursday with
rosamicula later in the week and twice in one week is probaby a bit much. We gossiped, we bitched, we drank and we ate: a fine evening.
Chush & fups were duly eaten with
rosamicula last night, after a cocktail or three in Lounge 34 by Waterloo, which is more expensive and less nice than Nakhon Thai (their happy hour only lasts for an hour the stingy gits) but I think the cocktails are better (although they don't do a daiquiri which is just wrong). We gossiped, we bitched, we drank and we ate, it's a fine way to pass an evening! And then we bumped into
webcowgirl on the way back to Waterloo. It's always odd when London does that. This is a huge city with tons of people that every so often decides to pretend it's a small market town. Bumping into
webcowgirl was particularly serendipitous as
rosamicula had earlier been saying how she'd like to meet her and we were making plans of trying to get them together.
Review
Belle De Jour by Anonymous
This is a light and fluffy read, not for the easily shocked as it is quite explicit in places. I'm not someone who finds the details of other people's sex lives to be particulary interesting or entertaining so I wasn't sure whether I'd just be thoroughly bored by page 5 of this book. I never had any difficulty putting it down and if I'd had to return it (I borrowed it off a friend) before finishing it, I wouldn't be heartbroken, but Ms Anonymous writes very well so despite my lack of interest in a lot of what she was writing about, I was fairly well entertained throughout.
Two stars from me, but if you are interested in, and entertained by, details of other people's sex lives then I would bump it up to a three, possibly even a four rating (out of five).
Word
virement noun A strictly regulated process of transferring items, especially public funds, from one financial account to another.
New jobs always come with their own language. This is a word I had to look up while reading a briefing paper. Thankfully this isn't something I'll need to understand the actual workings of.
