pickthemusic protection by massive attack

20.3 Now I can't change the way you feel  //  But I can put my arms around you  //  That's just part of the deal  //  That's the way I feel  //  I'll put my arms around you  //  I stand in front of you  //  I'll take the force of the blow // Protection

Maybe distance was the best option.

Claire looked over the college books in front of her, she had been accumulating them slowly and studying them even before she got the results from her GED test that told her she could have an elite education if she wanted.  She could apply to go somewhere other than New York, maybe somewhere in the States or maybe somewhere overseas somewhere.  Maybe it would be best if she left to go somewhere far away.  Maybe then she wouldn't be a risk to everyone, maybe then she wouldn't hurt and risk them all.

Maybe she wouldn't risk hurting Hiro and seeing the look on his face when he realized what she had been doing.  Maybe she wouldn't risk Sylar's struggle to be a better person.  He wouldn't feel the need to hurt others just to avenge her, risking himself and sliding back to the killer he had been.  Maybe she wouldn't worry Peter then, who feared that she would be his murderer in the end.  Adam wouldn't be put in the spot between his boyfriend and his secret granddaughter.  They wouldn't have to deal with her struggle then, she could give them piece of mind.

She flipped through the books, biting her lip as she sat there on the couch of the quiet townhouse.  Maybe it would be better, maybe she could blend into a college community, become just another face and just another girl.  She could pretend to be normal and maybe find her own place.  Maybe she could learn to get the panic attacks under control, there was a lot that she could do to give everyone peace of mind.

But would they let her leave?  How long before they showed up to convince her to come back home?  Or would they be furious and hurt by her leaving?  Or would they simply accept and send her off?  For some reaason she feared that was exactly what they would do and maybe they would.  She couldn't blame them if they did.

Sighing, she stood up and was about to head to her room when she heard the front door open, her name being called out.  She frowned, quickly looking around before shoving the small stack of distant college options under some magazines on the bookshelf.  Clearing her throat, she brushed her hands over her hips as she walked to help bring some bags in.

Maybe she would apply to the other places and see what she got before deciding whether distant was the best option or not.  She wasn't sure that she wanted to leave but she would do it if it would be better for everyone in the long run.
