I assume computers are still giving twice as much bang for the buck every 18 months, or perhaps 15 months. (It was supposedly down to 16 months a couple years ago, confirming Ray Kurzweil's prediction that the acceleration of change is itself accelerating.)

However, the quad core I bought some three years ago is still running Sims 3 with the latest expansion, even while two of the cores are running full speed folding proteins. The game only slows down if I have already run other games with memory leaks or crash to desktop, enough to reduce my available memory by a GB or more. This is easily solved by logging out and back in.

I wonder, what kind of applications cause people to buy the new PCs with 8 cores? Apart from servers, I mean. There really aren't many people editing video, are there?
