I don't think it can really be avoided. Or, well, maybe the world you come from has so many immortals in it that they can avoid forming any kind of relationship with mortal people, but that kind of segregated lifestyle seems like it would get very tedious after a while.

I can't help but think that it'd be more unhealthy that way than the other.

Of course friendships and business relationships and such aren't what you're talking about, but I'm not sure I see much of a distinction, in the end. As long as everyone involved keeps their expectations reasonable, what's fulfilling is really up to them, isn't it?

Of course I'm hardly speaking from any kind of personal experience. Maybe if I'd lived for a few hundred years, I'd have a different perspective on the subject.

The latter is the case. My world has a healthy population of vampires in most first world countries. Segregation is less an issue when you appear to be naturally unequal.

Humans are emotional creatures. To us relationships are different, but to them, love is apparently a required component for long-term happiness.

Maybe your subordinate feels that taking up with a mortal provides him with something that he's otherwise lacking.

Doubtful. Unless what he is lacking is a liability and cause for social suicide. And a pain in my ass.

Have you asked him about it personally?

I'm sure he'll see this.

This isn't exactly what I'd call asking personally, but either way, a firsthand explanation would probably answer your questions better than an outsider could.

I know. But I like to watch him get flustered.

I appreciate your information either way.

My pleasure. It's an interesting question.
