Tom's Midnight Garden by Phillipa Pierce
I have a thing for classic children's/YA novels of the past so I LEPT at the chance to read a time travely book about a boy who goes to stay at a strange house that has a garden from the Victorian/Edwardian era out back every night.  Alas, I think nostalgia on the part of rereaders gave it the high rating it has. It's Ok, it's just not GREAT like I found Swallows and Amazons to be.

The Islands of Chaldea by Diana Wynne Jones (& Ursula Jones)

Diana's last unfinished booooooooooooook. It was curious and charming and confused in that perfectly DIANA way that I love.

How are you supposed to turn into a Wise Woman if your powers just won’t show up? Aileen is convinced she’ll never become as magical as her Aunt Beck.

Then one day her aunt is set a seemingly impossible mission. She must go to the island of Logra and rescue the kidnapped High Prince from the enemy, and Aileen must go with her. They set off along with Ivar, Aileen’s spoilt cousin, and Ogo his clophopping servant, recruiting on their way a huge and elusive cat, a monk with an uncannily wise parrot, and a boy inventor who keeps a pet lizard up his sleeve. But this is no band of mighty warriors, and the evil Lograns and their wizards have blocked their way with an invisible barrier in the sea. Aileen doubts that even with all the magic in the Islands of Chaldea, including Aunt Beck’s, they will be able to penetrate it.

But Aileen is about to discover that she could be more important to the mission than she realises. Perhaps it is her, above all, who is being drawn to Logra, and for a very special purpose…

Valor's Choice by Tanya Huff

I was trying to give this other military sci fi series with a email lead a chance but it was not even a little bit engaging and when I bewailed my loss,  @bedlamsbard recomended/recolected to me Tanya Huff's Confederation novels!

I've read PILES of stuff by Tanya Huff, but I'd never been in the mood for female space marine adventures before. This hit the spot SO WELL. I read three in three days! :D They each had a charming Canadianism in them and I was duly charmed.

Searching For Dragons by Patrica Wrede

In my continuing adventures in listening to audiobooks/dramatic readings that I do not like of Enchanted Forest Chronicle books (that I very much do like) - take two!  Now with added MENDAMBARRRRRRR <3

I am still very much of the opinion that people who like the things I like should Read These Books. They are formative early-teenagerhood GEMS. And they stand up to rereading and adulthood very well indeed! <3
