PROMPT: A coffee shop that caters to supernatural creatures. ((from
newredshoes))
SETTING: The fictional city of Gemini
GENRE: Drama/fantasy
OPENING THEME: "People Are Strange"-- The Doors
PLOT: It's a universally-accepted fact that ghosts, werewolves, and such exist. What's not universally agreed upon is how to react to it. Some people set up Ghost Tours, showing tourists around the places where trapped spirits keep reliving their deaths. An enterprising corporation invents the SD-- the Supernatural Detector, which will go off should a vampire or werewolf masquerading as a "Normal" approach. And some people, like Elspeth, try to create a place that's a haven from politics and modern-day witch hunts. That plan works better on some days than others.
Fanbase info and, of course, cast underneath the cut--
FANBASE: Described by some critics as “The Lost Boys meets The West Wing”, the show mixed mythological lore with political intrigue, with the occasional comedic episode thrown in (one of the top tie-in shirts features the nobusama, the giant flying squirrel that shows up to cause havoc about once a season). Shippers were all over the show because anybody could be paired with most anybody else and have at least something in canon to support it.
CAST:
Protagonists--
Elspeth Jansen
played by Jasmine Guy
Her husband was killed in the Werewolf Riots of 2003, leaving her with a child to raise and a business to run. When she and Aiden started their coffee shop, Abby's, it was just an everyday hangout, though the sign "ALL types of customers welcome" signified that they wouldn't turn away a witch or two so long as they were polite. After his death, Elspeth turned Abby's into a 24-hour business and tacked up another sign, forbidding the use of SDs on her property. This brought her under fire from various Normal Rights groups, and now her business relies almost solely upon Supernaturals.
Caleb Carter
played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Security. He works the day shift (given that he's a werewolf, night shift isn't really a good choice). Was Aiden's college roommate and the best man at his and Elspeth's wedding. He's at Abby's largely to help out his friend; he prefers to stay under the radar, and even at this job he tries his best to not get into any sort of politics one way or the other.
Susan Lee
played by Gina Torres
One of the few Sidhe who've chosen to live among mortals, she's placed Abby's under her protection. For Elspeth, hiring her as the head of nighttime security was a no-brainer. Since those who like to cause problems have vastly different sleeping schedules, Caleb usually handles the protests from the Normal Rights groups and Susan handles problems that arise with the clientele or with radical groups on the supernatural side.
Sarah Mayfield
played by Angel Coulby
Their resident ghost. She was a waitress in the building years ago, and was killed in a robbery there. Her spirit's trapped in the location, and while she can deal with that fact a lot better now that it's not an abandoned storefront anymore, at times she still gets frustrated and then things have a tendency to fly off the walls.
Jodi Mayfield
played by Tracie Thoms
Sarah's little sister. She was ten when Sarah was killed. Their parents jumped at the chance to buy SDs when they first came out, and have always hated the idea of Supernaturals. Even after their child was killed, they couldn't cope with the idea of what she is now, hate the thought of her being 'stuck' in this place-- and so they've never been to the coffee shop. Jodi, however, moved to an apartment less than a mile away as soon as she turned eighteen, and when Elspeth started Abby's a couple of years later, she immediately applied for a job as a waitress. She and Elspeth are the only two Normals on staff.
Alan Bishop
played by Naveen Andrews
Part of the cleanup crew. He keeps odd hours, which Elspeth puts up with given the whole 'vampire' thing. He was Turned about three years ago, and is still not very happy about it. He doesn't say much, thinking that keeping to himself will get people to leave him alone. Instead, it seems to flip a "I can change him and he will love me forever!" switch in some of the clientele.
Tessa Flynn
played by Brigid Brannagh
Works on stocking in the back room. Also, basically lives back there. Her powers as a banshee hit their stride as she grew into adulthood, which led to her quickly dropping out of school and leaving her family behind-- she can foresee a death that will happen within the year, and in foreseeing it, she emotionally goes through it herself (hence the banshee wail). Lately she's been poking her nose out a little bit more, which Elspeth tries to encourage, though her shriek upon seeing Danny for the first time has got everybody on edge. . .
Danny Evans
played by Matthew Gray Gubler
The latest addition to the waitstaff. He put “Normal” on his application, but it comes out-- given that it's kindof hard to hide the fact that he's always carrying a little cactus in his apron pocket-- that he's the child of a human man and a dryad. The fact that he carries part of his spirit on the outside of his body made him enough of an oddity that he couldn't fit in with the Normals at school, but it also didn't give him any 'cool' powers. He's been trying to learn enough to become a warlock, with mixed results (Elspeth says that while she understands his reasons, if he summons another horde of gremlins she's going to have to fire him).
Abigail Jansen
Eleven-year old Abby spends quite a bit of her spare time at her mother's shop, where she's the unofficial mascot. She reads up a lot on Supernatural Rights and talks about rallies she wants to go to when she gets older. This both makes Elspeth proud and scares her to death.
Antagonists--
Emma Selandes
played by Morena Baccarin
A local member of SAN (Superiors Against Normals). Many in that group argue the case for separation; she and a few of her friends believe in extinction by way of Turning anyone they can. Caleb hates her for giving all of them who're just trying to get on with their lives a bad name, and Susan has had to break up plenty of fights between her and Alan. She was the one who Turned him.
Patrick Bryant
played by Paul Bettany
His spouse was also killed in the Werewolf Riots. Unlike Aiden, who was protesting against legislation that would allow SDs into public schools, his husband was there protesting for it. Patrick leaned toward David's side of the argument, but wasn't really involved until after the Riots. He hangs around Abby's a lot because he thinks sooner or later he'll get Elspeth to listen to him, to agree that things would be a lot less painful all around if Supernaturals and Normals stayed away from each other. ((also, there is the slight matter of a liking for Caleb. The episode midway through the first season where he finds out the guy is a werewolf is a fan favorite))
