A/N: In the middle of uni and work hell I’m doing what I do best: some shit! ST fics are damn hard to write for me! But I’ve something like this one in mind for quite some time.

SHE CALLS, SHE COMFORTS

I've been beat up, I've been thrown
Out but I'm not down, I'm not down.

She is beautiful. Not conventionally beautiful; she’s not all long legs and voluptuous forms and sweet voice and a talented mouth. Not like he is accustomed to. But he’d be damned if she hadn’t stolen his heart for good!

He remembers those long, sweaty nights back on Earth. The rattling of his motorbike; the ground dancing beneath his feet when he, dead-drunk and deliriously (pretentiously) happy, flings himself onto the haystack in the barn and enjoys these wee hours of morning before sobriety comes back to screw things up. The blinding lights of some noisy bar before that; cheap pick-up lines; no names, no faces, just mindless fuck.

Quiet rat-tat of rain upon the roof. Jim yawns, watching the grey fields around him sleep. The stars are barely visible in the stormy velvet of the sky.

“I’d do this an awful lot, you know,” he told Spock once when, during a shore leave gone awry, they were stranded by the river at night, stars twinkling overhead, bright like they never had been in Iowa. “Just lie somewhere and look up. Mom skipped back off to Starfleet when I was a kid, but she’d tell me all about the sky before that. Like which star’s which or what myths there are about them. Sometimes she’d even describe the places she’d been to with Dad.”

It rains a lot when he can’t sleep. Or maybe he can’t sleep when it rains. He doesn’t know. He just knows that rain takes his dreams away, and he doesn’t like it. He wants to go someplace quiet and dry because the raindrops falling over the roof of the farmhouse are making him restless.

“Stepdad hates it. No wonder, though. I’d be mad as a hornet as well if my wife couldn’t go a day without mentioning her former job and her dead husband! Then one day, I got really drunk. Ask Nyota, she’ll tell you. And Captain Pike dearest dug me up. That’s the gist of it. I’m with the stars.”

He smiles. He lowers his hand, touching the curves of the Captain’s chair. No rain here. No drunken haze. No sultry moans in the dingy rooms. He finally found the right girl. The one he likes waking up to every morning.

“Believe it or not, it was a dare.”

“Do you ever regret it?” Spock asked calmly.

“What?”

“Being with the stars.”

Leaving home, he meant.

“You kidding me? I used to ride a half-wrecked bike along the dusty roads; now I’m flying at WARP speed the most beautiful starship in this whole damn universe!” He laughed all of a sudden. “Here’s how your average Terran guy thinks. It’s all about the ride; the rest will take care of itself!”

It’s almost like those nights when the fields are asleep around him and he thinks he is alone in the world. It’s given way to his being alone on the bridge, vast darkness of space outside. He is unafraid when he looks at it. There are billions of stars all around him; finally he can touch them all. He thinks it is symbolic that he should fly a ship under such a name.

On quiet nights she almost talks to him. Oh, she can; she does talk to Scotty, or at least Scotty is the only one who seems to understand her. And she talks to Jim. She whispers like the rain, but she returns the dreams the rain used to steal. And for that, he is infinitely grateful. He prays only that he will fly with her forever.

She is not human love. But she is perfect.

“Never lose you,” he murmurs under his breath and knows that she would nod if she could. Instead, she keeps up her perfect steady going.

I've been shown up, but I've grown up
And I'm not down, I'm not down.
