Believing Is Tricky

The movie Fight Club (yet to read the book, shame) has fascinated me in that it very dramatically demonstrates the power of the mind. It's inspiring to me. Along the same lines, I am reading this morning about the power of positive (& negative) thinking & reinforcement.
It's evidently quite easy to trick one's brain into having confidence & the like. But according to my source (National Geographic), it's not something one can really do on one's own. For instance, say I want to overcome a headache. If I believe that a placebo sugar pill will heal it, then likely it will. So then, how do I make myself believe it? That's the catch.
The same idea can be applied to something like a good luck charm. If you really think your rabbit's foot will help you get a job, you'll most likely do better in the interview, because of the confidence your rabbit's foot gives you, or the confidence you've given yourself by believing. Again, the trick is convincing yourself it will work.
Repeated affirmations do the same, only much more slowly. If you repeat an affirmation, or really anything I suppose, at least 100 times a day, in six months, your brain will have created a neuro-connection & the affirmation will be truth to you. Isn't that crazy? It's not all that simple, however... If it were, the world would be such a nicer place, don't you think?
