Possibly (I'm hoping, I'm hoping, I'm hoping) this will become a coat to wear next week while in Montreal:

That looks glorious! It will be beautiful. Based on the weather reports, you will need it (and sixteen other layers of warm clothing).

I've got a coat that I should get started on. I've only had the pattern and material for two years now (forest green wool/poly, gold brocade lining with dragons and phoenixes embroidered. the pattern is a militaryish chineseish thing). Oh, that a day had 30 hours!

Heeey, that sounds gorgeous! You should start it. :) I've had my wool for 5+ years and the pattern for 2 or 3 years...it's never too late to start! At the moment, I only have one or two hours at a time to work on my coat, but I'm hoping to get it finished by Saturday. Except for the buttonholes, because those take forever. ;)

Btw, it's the white coat here:

That's the coat I've been wanting to make for EVAR!!!! Someday, when I actually make money, I'll do it. Mine's simplicity 3628 (link doesn't want to happen) and the orange one on the front, but in searching for it I found Butterick 4929 (or was it 2949?) that's got some fantastic coats for when I feel like being eccentric. You might like them, too (vaguely asian and victorian, kinda steampunk)

Oooh, I've got Simplicity 3648! I totally forgot about that. I'll have to dig that out and see how many yards it takes because I may have enough wool or velveteen. (SQUEE!)

Oh! I just found Butterick 4929 - holy carp! That's soooo cool. I'm going to have to snatch that pattern up next time I'm at Joann's! Thanks so much for pointing that out! (Just for the record, I lurve the one with the gathered back made up in swirly brown material.) I also found this one that's rather nice:

Oh, you should totally start making a coat or jacket. They're hard (I find because I'm not an average shape, so I have to make a mock-up and then fit fit fit.), but then you get to wear it and walk down the street and think 'I am so cool. I am wearing this awesome coat and I made it. Nyah on the world.'

*goes off to cut out the coat pieces*

I'd tell you how much you'd need, but my pattern seems to be on the other side of the mountains, while my fabric's here. Bother.

Lovely long coats. I want to live in a place where long autumny coats are wearable most of the year (instead of the two weeks and then you need a really good waterproof rainjacket). They're so much fun!

I have a concert coming up in a couple of weeks, and I desperately need some new concert blacks (Why no, I don't make coffee in my concert blacks ever. Nuh-uh. And that hole in an important seam isn't incredibly visible. Not at all), so I think something for that will come before a coat. I did, however, make a dance jacket (dark blue velvet, silver braid) for competing in Highland dance.

Ooo! You do Highland dancing? Neat! I played the bagpipes for years. Always wanted to dance, but I was on the heavier side of things and no one took me seriously. Oh well. :) (I'm considering taking up the Irish pipes - the kind that lay across your lap...)

This sewing project has been incredibly fun. I highly recommend sewing with wool. It's so forgiving that it makes you feel like you actually know what you're doing. (Except, I redrafted the sleeves for this pattern, just put one sleeve on and I hate it. Argh! I'm going to to have redraft it again. :( )

You could probably get a wool flannel that's lightweight enough to not be too warm and still be stylish out there...
