Even if this blog is about the 1940’s you may have notice that I sometimes go outside the decade. Nothing exists in a vacuum and sometimes I feel the need to reach outside to give a little perspective. Something it’s much too easy to look at something and isolate it from the before and after, but I think it’s important to see the larger picture. ( Read more... )

So, right now I suddenly noticed something that I never thought about before. The lace and fabric of this bodice is the same as on the skirt with lace on. Duh! They belong together, and I had no idea. When I photographed them I unpacked a garment, took a pic and re-packed it before I took the next one. Oh well. Skirt in very crisp silk taffeta. Made of straight pieces. Front and back looks the same, The front is slightly gathered to the waistband, and then there are three pleats on each side. Unfortunately I didn't managed to take any good pics. I think it may be from around 1910. This skirt, and the next has very tiny waists, around 50 cm.

Made of four pieces. Two slightly gored front pieces, and two curved back pieces. Though it's in silk taffeta, it's not as well made as the other clothes. The ruffle is not finsihed, and very uneven, though that can be because it has been worn a lot. The pocket at the hem is not finsihed either. My guess is 1890's.

I have no good reasons to why I think this cape is younger than the other two. Perhaps because it has a simpler design. Or because it's in such good condition. It looks brand new, and must not have been worn much. It's made of taffeta, with appliques made of silk velvet. There are also two rows of silk fringe.
