Happy Santa Hat Season, everyone!
What I've recently finished reading:
I finished The True Queen by Zen Cho, which - as I said last week, it was a bit frustrating figuring out what was going on before any of the other characters did, and waiting for them to do so as well. Otherwise, it was mostly quite charming, though the endgame romance seemed a bit sudden. Rollo is still my favorite character from this series.
I also read a few fics. I abandoned the Outlander fic
The Tagalong by
Lenny9987 at the 40% mark (after 8/25 chapters of a 45K fic) because although it was a cool idea - Fergus accidentally goes through the stones after Claire and ends up in the future - there was no actual plot. It just felt like "I like these characters and want to ramble about them," which to be fair, is a problem with a few of the Outlander books in the middle of the series as well.
I enjoyed
A kiss slowly rising to the eyes of the sea by
Dorinda, an Aubrey/Maturin fic with beautiful character voices and a sweetly satisfactory conclusion.
What I'm currently reading:
Still listening to All the Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater. I have also started Sword Song, the fourth book in Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories (The Last Kingdom) series.
What I'm currently watching:
B wanted to watch the new Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance series, and despite my being meh on the movie, I'm enjoying the series a lot! It's a prequel, and there's quite a bit of an exposition dump in the first part of the first episode, so you don't actually have to have seen the movie (and honestly if you haven't, I wouldn't recommend it!). The combination of puppetry with just enough CGI to make it realistic is great. The voice acting is an all-star cast: Nathalie Emmanuel ! Lena Headey! Catriona Balfe! Eddie Izzard and Natalie Dormer had delightful but too-small parts; Jason Isaacs, Simon Pegg, Benedict Wong, and Mark Hamill are in most of the episodes! (Oh, and I forgot Helena Bonham-Carter and Mark Strong! It's like everyone was like, "Muppets? Sign me up!")
I thought things meandered a bit excessively at first, and I was super disappointed that the dual nature of the Skeksis and the Mystics (the most interesting thing about the movie, to me) was not even touched on, let alone foregrounded, for a very long time, but we've finally gotten there, and hoo boy shit is getting real. Three episodes left!
What someone in the house is currently playing:
Yeah, I'm still playing Dragon Age: Inquisition. But! A few weeks ago I found out that Red Dead Redemption 2 was released for the PC, and I thought B would like that sort of game (I mean, open world and the old west), so I encouraged him to buy it. But it is still buggy enough that it just frustrated him, and so out of desperation (because he'd started to get back into the "ooh, video games are fun" mindset) he picked up his old Skyrim game that he'd started last year and got bored with, and now he is obsessed and playing it all the time. (Which is kind of cute, really, but damn it, I'm supposed to be working and it's not fair when he's playing Skyrim in the next room!)
