wednesday reads n' things

First, speaking of both reading and listening:
sisi_rambles has podficced my story The Cinder-Fellow, which I wrote for Yuletide 2011: [Podfic] The Cinder-Fellow. This is a story for the Tales of the Five Hundred Kingdoms series by Mercedes Lackey, a world in which The Tradition tries to force people's lives into the familiar fairytale patterns, and Godmothers either help things run smoothly, or fix them when they don't, but as you can probably infer from the title it's also an m/m Cinderella pastiche. I really love this story and so I'm delighted it was podficced!

What I recently abandoned:

Fire & Blood by George R. R. Martin, which is a history of the Targaryens purportedly by a learned maester of the Citadel, and holy moly it is just as boring as my high school history textbook. Maybe more boring, because while real history is interesting because it's about the world around us, this is a pseudohistory only of interest to people who really, really, REALLY care about ASoIaF. To me, it was telling-not-showing taken to an expositional extreme, and I quit after the first chapter.

What I'm currently reading:

In text, The True Queen by Zen Cho, which is the sequel to Sorcerer to the Crown. I'm nearly done and enjoying it, though it was pretty clear to me what was going on from quite early on, and so it was kind of exasperating waiting for the characters to figure it out, too (which they just did).

In audio, All the Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater. This seems to be the rare book that I am sort of wishing I'd read in text rather than in audiobook; not because the narrator's poor (he's not, he's quite good) but because the somewhat stylized story-telling format would work better that way, I think. My favorite thing about this book so far is that it takes place in my (extended) back yard. (And props to the narrator for saying the name of the town Saguache correctly! That's definitely a local shibboleth.)

What I've recently finished watching:

We finished Dark Matter, and aw, I can kind of see why it got canceled - the last half of the second season felt kind of like flailing in random directions for a plot - but also, there was so much plot set-up that I am bummed not to see where things would have gone.

We also watched the movie The Dark Crystal (1982) because the new prequel series is supposed to be quite good, but wow, does the movie ever show its age. I think I watched it back when it first came out, but I'd completely forgotten everything in it. I am...not super excited about watching the series now. Maybe we'll watch Gentleman Jack first.

What I'm currently playing:

I finally stopped dawdling on DA:I and did the main quest "Here Lies the Abyss," and I should have done it before, darn it, because it was novel enough to keep my interest. Okay! I will play more!
