Here is a lovely article at The Guardian on
How Star Trek changed (and sometimes saved) fans' lives.
What I've recently finished reading (listening to):
The audiobook of 1356 by Bernard Cornwell, which despite being the conclusion of a series did stand alone pretty well. This is a historic novel that leads up to a climax at the Battle of Poitiers, an important battle in the Hundred Years' War between England and France, and man, is there a lot of fighting. Unfortunately in audiobook I couldn't skim over the many gory battles. Cornwell also regards archers and archery like Tom Clancy regards submarines, and there are many lovingly detailed and repetitive descriptions of the archer's quidditch-toned archery-honed muscles. But the actual human stories are pretty enjoyable, and there's a lot of humor in it.
What I've recently given up reading:
I started, and abandoned, Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me by Mariko Tamaki, a graphic novel illustrated by Rosemary Valero-O'Connell. I researched this as part of Yuletide tag approvals, and it sounded interesting: a graphic novel about a high school girl with girlfriend trouble. But it turns out that I am not the intended audience for this book. This has nothing to do with sexuality, it's because I am just too old to care about high school romance angst, and the other aspects of the book (art, composition, themes) are not sufficiently attractive to me to encourage me to spend my time on it.
What I'm currently reading:
I just started Naomi Novik's Spinning Silver; so far I don't love it, but I'm interested enough to keep reading.
What I'm currently watching:
We have two more episodes to go in S2 of Dark Matter. I'm really enjoying the combination of overall arc plus episodic adventures. The found-family feels index definitely goes to ELEVEN.
