a box of chocolates!

Feb 17, 2019 09:51

Figuratively, that is, since I'm talking about my three delightful femslash gifts for Chocolate Box!

(Though to make the chocolate allusion literal, I will also point to this recipe for flourless chocolate cakes for two which I made for our Valentine's Day dessert, and we ate without the whipped cream (I just dusted a little confectioner's sugar on) and it worked beautifully and was very tasty. Wheat free, milk-free though you'd need to sub out the butter if you want dairy-free. It puffed up in the oven but collapsed as it cooled, which was fine.)

Summary: While they are trapped in the besieged nunnery of Wincelcumb, Skade catches Æthelflæd alone to sate her curiosity about the princess for whose rescue Uhtred left behind everything. Æthelflæd is thoroughly unimpressed by her scrutiny but willing to meet her head on, and might discover far more of herself in the seer than she could ever be comfortable with.

I'm pretty sure this was written by my assigned author, as it's the only of my gifts that was posted before the deadline (yeah, I shook it!), and it's really great! This is everything I wanted from this pairing: the tension of their differences, the gradual realization of their common ground as strong women who chafe against the limits of tenth-century attitudes, who hate that they must achieve what power they can through men, and not on their own. Skade is sly and aggressive, Æthelflæd is straightforward and wary. It's a completely believable missing scene for this series.

Summary: Circe and Penelope prepare a ritual bath together.

You might recall that I ended my review of Circe, which I read in November, with I still kind of wanted it to end with Circe and Penelope together as Lesbian Witches of Aiaia. Well, some lovely person wrote it for me! The pastiche is so perfect, measured and evocative prose that reads just like the book, that as I said in my comment, I'm probably going to forget how the novel actually ended and just substitute this in as my headcanon. I love Circe's evolving view of Penelope, first as Odysseus' wife, and then as a woman in her own right, mortal and complex.

Summary: Sometimes, a cat visits M's office.

This is an adorable little snippet of what is really my favorite sort of relationship these days, two older women who are comfortable with themselves and with each other. I'm a huge crossover fan, and I am so tickled by the idea of M and Minerva being long-time lovers who can complain about their respective problems over a drink.

I wrote two stories, both of which I think scream ISIS WROTE ME! but I guess we always think we're obvious, don't we!
