For
this year's Remix Revival I ended up writing my assignment and two pinch hits. One each slash, femslash, and gen, as it turns out! (I also wrote two stories in the Madness collection, but they won't reveal until tomorrow.)
My assigned author was
Prinzenhasserin, matching on the Gentleman Bastard Sequence book series by Scott Lynch, and I remixed
Corsets and other Paraphernalia, a Yuletide fic which has the very descriptive tag "Crossdressing for Crime." I used the same MacGuffin of needing to take ownership of the house formerly belonging to the Bondsmage Pel Acanthus in order to obtain his diary, but with a completely different chain of events, because (as I commented in my own author's note) the real plot of both fics is Jean is distracted by Locke in a dress, and the funky remix subtitle is a nod to this.
Corsets and Con Games (Devil in a Blue Dress Mix) (3598 words) by
IsisFandom:
Gentleman Bastard Sequence - Scott LynchRating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Locke Lamora/Jean Tannen
Characters: Locke Lamora, Jean Tannen
Additional Tags: Remix, Crossdressing for Crime, Sexual Tension, Friends to Lovers, Crossdressing
Summary: “Am I not the Thorn of Camorr? Am I not a master of disguise?” / “Master, yes,” said Jean. “Not a mistress.”
The first pinch-hit I picked up was for
Quillori. I remixed
Fennario, a Jukebox fic written for the Grateful Dead song "Dire Wolf", because it's eerie and atmospheric but it is also ambiguous, with several passages that could be taken in various ways, and I saw a chance to choose and emphasize one particular interpretation. I changed the narrator to a more explicitly external "dire wolf" and imposed more of a structure on the story, but I stole reused all her best lines and imagery. I swapped out the original title for one that I felt had more meaning for my own story. The funky remix subtitle is, of course, another Grateful Dead song, as well as a reference to my chosen interpretation.

Summary: You can run a tab for a while. But sooner or later, you’ve got to settle up.
I also took on a post-deadline pinch-hit, for
dancesontrains. I remixed
The Hole at the Edge of the Story, a Snow White/Beauty and the Beast femslash ficlet originally written as commentfic for the Porn Battle. (Though I didn't remember reading it before, when I clicked through to the original posting I saw I'd commented on it!) I expanded the ficlet into a more detailed story, made the narrator more explicitly a storyteller (and something else...), and also framed it with a second story, thus the funky remix subtitle.

Summary: We all know how fairy tales go. They begin with once upon a time and end with happily ever after, stock phrases that bookend each story. Before and after there is nothing, at least in the fairy tales. But lives are not like that.
