I don't really know why I still maintain a
website. None of my recent stories are on it. I've been slowly and erratically porting everything over to the AO3, and most everything is there now other than RPF and Harry Potter fandom stories. I keep meaning to finish the job and remove the site, but I haven't felt inspired to actually do so, and as a result, every time my domain comes up for renewal I check the box and let it happen. It's not that expensive, after all. Nice to have some web space, right?
I have no idea if anyone is actually using
my fic and vid recs any more. I mean, the last recs I posted were in 2009. I'm not in any of those fandoms any more. Sometimes I go back to the site to find something I want to rec someone, usually because there's a particular trope or type of story I think they'll enjoy. At least half of the time, though, the link goes to 404.
Mostly the site has not been worth messing with. But in the last few weeks, it's received a flood of spam comments. Not that this really matters; the recs site isn't something most people comment on, so when I got my first ever spam comments, ages ago, I set all comments to full moderation status and let them accumulate invisibly.
But now I'm getting 20-30 a day, and the email is freakin' annoying. I suspect it's all from automated robots that don't even notice that their spam comments are invisible. I went into my site control panel (fortunately, my password was saved in my browser, because I am sure I have forgotten it) and deleted all the spam comments (about 300!), but it looks as though my settings are already updated to disallow commenting - I think there must be some mismatch between the ancient version of Wordpress I used to set up my recs site, and the current one.
I can't think of any reason why I shouldn't just delete my recs site. It's not remotely current, it's full of dead links, and I doubt anybody other than robots ever sees it. And yet. My finger has not yet hit the delete button. I think it will, soon. But it hasn't yet.
