side note,
while studying for my anthro exam and reading about Triobrand cricket,
i inadvertently came across Ahmadinejad's speech, president of Iran.
now i, like all my western media fed friends/family/neighbours/whatever had only heard this historic soundbyte in it's CNN translation.
so i was justifiably horrified and confused at why the rather educated president would declare such ludicrous things, on par with drunken Yeltsin,
moreso even,
Ridiculous statements denying the holocaust, saying Israel should be wiped from the map etc.
When I told my dad this months ago, he laughed at me but didn’t comment, probably tired of explaining the political workings of everything to me time and time again, and tired of talking about what essentially amounts to his work for many years.
He changed the topic.
Tonight after reading about cultitural and political systems I became curious and after MUCH MUCH searching found the speech in Persian, without the English translation overtop.
Now I can see why he laughed.
When properly translated, forget that. I’m Persian, I don’t need a translator. WHAT I HEARD was that the Iranian president states that aggressive regimes like Israel and in the US crumble by their own virtue over time. Nowhere does he demand the elimination or annihilation of Israel. He calls for greater governance for Palestine and declares that the western world has forgotten the nation and people of Palestine and the eastern world will not. The word map itself is not mentioned anywhere.
And the president makes it plain that the Holocaust happened, but he argues western powers have exploited the memory of the Holocaust for their own imperialistic purposes.
And now I get why my dad laughed and my own nervous giggles fill the appartment, what can one do after all when an entire culture and nation has chosen to deliberately vilify another? Not much. I still can’t get over that discrepancies of this calibre can exist within what we consider the pillars of democratic journalism.
Also, I’d like to say that the BBC translation of the speech contains no Israel Map nonsense, just the crazy North American one does, translated by none other than MEMRI.
A really lovely completely unbiased group of neocon boys and girls who’ve been around since Wolfowitz and who fund PNAC.
