"Are you okay?" Juliet asks from across the breakfast table when he has a mouth full of toast.
He crunches it down and says, "Yeah, I'm fine, why?"
She looks at him quizzically and shrugs. "I don't know. You're...quiet."
"Hey, I can be quiet sometimes," he argues. She smiles and shakes her head.
She walks around the table, puts her hand on the back of his neck and kisses his forehead. "Whatever you say," she replies, walking back to the bedroom to change for work. He finishes his toast and about five minutes later she comes back in her jumpsuit. "Remember, Horace is coming back from the mainland today."
He nods, passively. "I remember."
She smiles a sidewise smile. "Okay, have a good day."
"You too," he lifts his head and kisses her goodbye. "Love you," he adds, while her hand is in his hair.
"I love you too." She smiles, kisses him again, then leaves.
As soon as the door clicks shut behind her, his head whips around to check the clock. Actually, Horace should be back in the sub any minute now. He makes a half-hearted attempt to clean up the mess from breakfast and as soon as he's sure that Juliet's far enough away from the house that he won't be noticed, he walks down toward the dock.
"Hey," he says, jogging down when he sees Horace climbing up out of the sub. "You get it?"
Horace smirks and reaches into his pocket, tossing what he pulls out into Sawyer's waiting hand. He slides the box open and smiles. "Well?" Horace asks.
He looks up. "It's great," he replies. "Thanks."
Horace nods. "Let me know what she says, man."
Sawyer nods, shoves the box deep in his pocket, and starts up the dock back to the house. He looks around as he walks and things about how things had changed so much over the past few years. This place had been such a living hell - for him and Juliet - for what seemed like much more time than it actually was.
But now they had jobs and a house and each other. Now they were happy. Sometimes he wonders how in the hell that happened, but mostly he's just enjoying it too much to care. It had felt like forever since he'd enjoyed anything, but now...life is so much better now.
He sits on the living room couch for about ten minutes with the small box in his hand. Inside is a ring. An engagement ring. He had asked Horace to get one - a small one, a tasteful one, none of that flashy crap - the next time he went out to the mainland, and he almost can't believe he's really holding it in his hand. He can't believe how scared he isn't.
He used to laugh at those idiots who said things like "when it's right, you'll know". He'd thought it was the dumbest thing in the world, maybe because he'd never had it before. He had once told Kate that he'd never been in love. And he hadn't. But he is now. And he knows it's right, she's right.
He puts the box inside of a little velvet bag and puts the bag inside of the shoebox he keeps under the floorboards. He has the most important things he owns in that box, and now the ring too.
He doesn't know how he's going to ask her, or where, or when. All he knows is that he wants to marry her. And that's all he needs.
