“We should get some sleep,” she suggests. She expects a fight because that’s just the kind of mood he’s in. Seeing Kate in the jungle, his nose starting to bleed…he’s got a lot on his mind. And so has she, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’re the only ones still awake. And she has no idea how long it will stay night. She should sleep, and for whatever reason, it’s important to her to try to convince him to do the same.

“I ain’t tired,” he replies. The lie is so blatant she almost rolls her eyes. He’s slumped against the base of a tree, staring up at the stars through the canopy of trees. He looks haggard and defeated. She’s pretty sure he’s feeling the same way she’s feeling right now.

Now that John is gone, they’re back to where they where before he had showed back. Waiting for answers and trying to survive. She’s practiced at waiting - she was trapped with Ben for three years before Jack and the opportunity he had presented had come along. She has learned to be patient.

Yet, she can’t sleep. She should - they both should - but she somehow can’t manage it. From the looks of it, neither can Sawyer.

“You think he’ll really be able to do it?” he asks, without looking at her. He hasn’t done a lot of talking since Jin and Miles had fallen asleep, and she guesses this is what he’s been thinking about it. She’d be lying if she said she hasn’t considered the question herself. “You think he’ll be able to get ‘em all to come back?”

“You know him better than I do,” she says. He snorts and shakes his head, finally tearing his eyes away from the stars to frown at the darkness. Obviously he doesn’t agree.

“I think it’s gonna be a hard cell,” he answers. She gets the feeling he isn’t talking for her benefit, nor had he asked the question because he was really interested in her answer. She thinks he needs to get out of his head, and if that’s the case, she supposes she’s willing to listen. “I mean, who the hell’d wanna come back here?” He sighs like he finds what he just said as profoundly depressing as it was true. If she had finally left this place, she doubted there was any argument in the world that would convince her to come back. “And the Doc, he’ll probably just stay behind outta spite.”

He does look away then and mutters, “Sorry.” She waves him off, lets it slide off her back. She doesn’t allow herself to think of Jack much. She can’t help it, at times, but mostly, it’s just too painful. But she refuses to let it own her. Sawyer shakes his head and goes on, “And anyway, how do we even know Locke’s right, that bringin’ them all back’s gonna fix anything?’

“Do you believe him?” she questions. She thinks she knows the answer. She thinks it’s the same as hers.

Sawyer looks away from her yet again. He doesn’t seem to want to answer her, but its written all over her face. He wants to believe John is right, despite everything telling him not to, because if John is right, he gets what he wants most. If John is right and what he’s attempting works, Kate will come back. And he won’t allow himself to hope.

“Who cares what I think?” he dismisses, gruffly.

“I care,” she tells him. He seems a bit startled, glancing at her like he didn’t know quite how to react. She looks him dead in the eyes, because it’s somehow important to her that he knows she’s telling the truth. She can tell he believes her when he drops his gaze down, then away.

“I believe Locke is outta his damn mind, and he always has been,” he answers. There’s a stiffness in his voice, like he’s being honest with her, but he’s not all that pleased about it. “But he does tend to stumble over the right idea every now and then by accident. And if it stops my nose from bleeding and keeps my brain from getting’ scrambled, I’ll treat him to a warm Dharma beer when he gets back.”

It’s pretty much the answer she had expected. Deflective with a bit of sarcasm and no mention whatsoever of Kate. It doesn’t matter, though. She knows what it’s like to have your walls built up so high, even if you bring them down halfway, no one will be able to see over them. He has to hide behind the mask of the self-centered man who’s only goal is self-preservation. And that’s okay, because she has to hide behind the mask of the woman who is always in complete control of herself and who can handle whatever is thrown her way.

They need to be how they are to get by.

“We should get some sleep,” she repeats, leaning back against a tree and resting her arms on top of her knees.

Sawyer nods, eyes back on the stars. “Yeah, we should.”

They don’t.
