Not a lot of people know about Joanna. Kate tells her about what happened, about how Boone had tried to save her, and suddenly it makes sense to her. She’s been wading out into the ocean every few days, not too far, just far enough to soothe the ache in her legs. And every day she has seen Boone, not far away, trying not to appear as though he’s keeping an eye on her even though he is.
It’s nice, she thinks, and every time she sees him out of the corner of her eye, she smiles. It’s nice that he worries when he hardly knows her. It’s nice that he cares.
