Title: Far Off Places
Rating: PG
Summary: Paradise doesn’t look like paradise when you’re trapped there.
Disclaimer: I do not own Lost. At all. I wish but alas...
Author's Note: For gottalovev, for the luau at lostsquee. This loosely fits the vacation prompt, but you might have to squint at it a little. I also aged Alex up a few years so I didn't feel creepy.

“Will you take me with you when you go?” Alex asked him.

“Sure,” he answered. She didn’t trust him enough to think he was being honest. For her own peace of mind she told herself that he did.

“I hate the beach,” she confided, wrapped in a blanket and him, in a bed another woman had just left. Not that it mattered, or that she cared. She was a teenager, but she wasn’t stupid. A consequence of being forced to grow up too fast.

“So do I,” he told her. She didn’t doubt that. He’d actually lived there. She just hated it because it was the only thing she’d looked at for the last nineteen years. Paradise doesn’t look like paradise when you’re trapped there.

“I want to see cities,” she told him. “New York. Los Angeles. Paris. Anywhere you can’t see the ocean.” Even if it was an unattainable dream, even if he was lying to her, thinking about it, talking about it, kept the dream alive.

“You will kid,” Sawyer answered. “Someday.”

Someday.

“You won’t take me with you, will you?” Her voice is full of sober honesty. There was no judgment there. She wouldn’t cry or whine. She didn’t love him, so it didn’t really matter if he lied to her.

“Sure I will,” he replied. Maybe he would. It wasn’t like, if rescue did come, he’d keep her on the island. As to whether he’d stay with her when her feet touched a real world she’d never known…who was to say? “You’ll get there. We both will.”

“Yeah,” she agreed. “I will.”
