She could keep them out. Not for long. Prolong her life for a fraction of time barely worth mentioning. That’s what she’s good at, right? Being one step ahead. Always a little bit faster, smarter, until the end. Until the end.
And the end is where she is. Out of time, out of speed, out of life.
She could put off the inevitable just a little while longer; she’s had a lot of practice. She could, but she doesn’t. What she’s good at, great at, spent her last ten years doing and excelling at means nothing now. If it ever had.
All her running, all the steps ahead she has always been have lead her to her last step, to here, to dying in an old motel room with no one and with nothing. Her run is over. She has nowhere left to go, and nothing left to do but wait for the end.
