Title: It's the Wrong Time for Somebody New
Rating: PG
Summary: It’s as if, at that moment, everything that they could have had, and everything that they could have been lingers in between them. It’s almost as if they both see it, for a single second, before it vanishes like the mirage it is.

“I know you’re awake.”
It’s that simple. She knows that Jack has been listening to her the whole time, but it doesn’t matter. Jack hides from the truth, pushes it down deep inside of himself with the practiced ease.
But this, he had needed to hear. As much as Kate had needed to hear it. As much as Juliet had needed to say it.
“Juliet-”
She smiles softly and shakes her head. “It’s fine Jack,” she tells him. It isn’t, not really, but, in time, it will be. Jack just shakes his head. Denial gives him comfort, she realizes. But not her. Not anymore. “You’re going to be fine, but you need to rest, so I’m going to go now.”
She’s finished Jack’s stitches, and now time and sleep are all that he will need to heal. Her job is done. She stands, but Jack reaches out and takes hold of her arm. His grip is gentle, weak, and it would be easy to shake off. But she doesn’t.
“You’re wrong,” he tells her. She just shakes her head at the denial. Jack has never been a good liar, but sickness has made him even worse now. “I’m not in love with Kate,” he insists..
Juliet reaches up her arm and places her hand on top of Jack’s. It’s the same as before, and she knows it. Jack isn’t assuring her for her sake, but for his own, as if he says the words enough times, they will become true.
But Juliet isn’t a fool, and she isn’t one to believe things just to soothe her own feelings. Jack may not want to give her the honest-to-god truth, but she doesn’t need him to. She’s a smart enough woman to know that she stands, and has always stood, in Kate Austen’s shadow. She’s a mature enough woman to have made her peace with that.
At a different time, well…everything could have been different.
She says, “Sleep,” and stands, backs away from Jack, who watches her with resigned eyes. It’s as if, at that moment, everything that they could have had, and everything that they could have been lingers in between them. It’s almost as if they both see it, for a single second, before it vanishes like the mirage it is.
Juliet backs away and Jack closes his eyes, and it all begins to end.
