Title: Can You Hear Me Now?
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Urgency. That’s what’s in his voice. Okay, so Bobby wants to get him off the phone.
Disclaimer: I do not own Supernatural. A girl can dream, but, alas, that’s would be all that it is.
Author's Note: This isn’t really set at any particular point in canon, so it’s pretty much just in it’s own little world. :)

“What?”

The demanding, almost downright angry tone of Bobby’s voice catches Sam off guard.

“Hey, Bobby, it’s Sam.”

“Oh. Sam.”

His voice softens a bit, but there’s something else there too. Sam doesn’t know what to make of it. Disappointment? Discomfort?

“Yeah, I kind of need your help with something.”

“Can it wait until tomorrow?”

There it is again. That something Sam can’t quite put his finger on.

“Yeah, sure, but we’re on our way to a motel for the night, and my cell battery’s about to die, so I just thought I’d try you now.”

A sigh.

“Can you make it quick?”

Urgency. That’s what’s in his voice. Okay, so Bobby wants to get him off the phone.

“Um...”

Sam’s sure it sounds dumb. He feels dumb saying it, but he’s so damn confused he really can’t help himself. Dean looks over at him, and Sam knows Dean thinks he sounds dumb. Sam shrugs, because he can’t very well say, ‘Bobby’s acting weird’ with Bobby listening on the other end of the line.

“Give me a second Sam.”

There’s some shuffling on Bobby’s end of the line, and, Sam’s pretty sure he hears someone else’s voice. It’s muffled, and Sam holds his phone a little bit closer to his ear, as if that’s going to help him hear what’s going on any better.

“Hey, let go.”

That was Bobby. Sam screws up his face.

“He’s busy.”

That was Ellen. She sounds irritated and out of breath. Sam’s eyes go wide.

“So, unless the world is ending, I suggest calling back tomorrow.”

“Ellen?”

Sam’s voice is barely above a squeak. Dean turns to him sharply, and mouths, ‘Ellen?’. Sam can only shrug, eyes still wide wish shock.

“Sam.”

Ellen says his name barely above a whisper. She sounds as shocked as he feels.

“Bobby didn’t tell me it was you.”

“I didn’t have the chance.”

Bobby’s voice comes softly from the background.

“You know what, tell him it can wait until tomorrow after all, and, um, you two have a good...whatever.”

“Sam, you don’t have to-”

“It’s okay, Ellen, it’s not important. Really. So, goodnight-bye. I mean, goodbye.”

Sam hangs up the phone and drops it like it had burned him. Dean is chuckling from the driver’s seat. Sam feels like he’s just walked in on his parents having sex. Because, honestly, Bobby and Ellen are about the closest thing he has now.

“Bobby and Ellen?” Sam asks, as if Dean might have known about it before he did. The way he’s shaking his head and smiling like it’s his birthday says to Sam that, no, he did not know. And that he and Dean are on, like, totally different planets about the news.

“Atta boy, Bobby,” Dean says. When Sam looks down at his phone and sees the battery has died, he’s actually kind of glad. And he’s next to certain that he’s going to insist Dean make the phone calls to Bobby from now on.
