ADVENTURE for Smallville Fen (and other interested parties)

Last week was an amazing week for comics - I read at least fifteen titles and they were all happy-making. Many of them were excellent. One of the highlights was Adventure Comics and I want to bring it to the attention of Smallville fans especially. The star of Adventure is Conner Kent (aka Kon-El, aka Superboy), our canon-Clex lovechild. *pets*

So, what's it about?

ADVENTURE COMICS IS A CLEX BOOK!

Seriously.

CLEX. IS. IT'S. THEME.
As clearly indicated by the cover:

Gratuitously posting the splash page just because it's so gorgeous. Actually, I want to point out the prominent use of the Smallville sunset. Colorist, Brian Buccellato outdid himself on this book.

There's a meet-cute involving a bridge accident. Smallville homage anyone?

Conner spends this issue checking off a list of "What did Superman do?". Number Two on the list is "Attend Smallville High School".
Q. Of all subjects available, why would the options available be chemistry and animal husbandry?
A. So we can see Conner choose his Luthor side over his Kent side, of course.

We're introduced to a science-minded Auburn-haired individual with ominous tones of Epic Destiny. Of course, his name is "Valentine".

Not on the list is visiting the house where Lex grew up in Smallville. Conner does it anyway. I LOVE the art in this sequence, both the coloring by Buccellato and the pencils and inks by Francis Manapul.

Notice how Clark is in shadow and Conner is gently bathed in the light streaming through the window.

Half in light, half in shadow. Also, notice how Clark has a sturdy wall behind him, but Conner is framed by a gaping hole giving us a glimpse of a trashed room inside.

OMG! It's present tense. CHECK.

One of the things I loved about this issue was how Conner appeared accepting and open throughout, but by the end we clearly see he's just as mixed up as he was before Infinite Crisis. Only this time, he has a plan. I'm looking forward to watching it unfold.
