Doiby peeked in his rearview mirror - Alan sure looked a dashing figure in his fancy dress for the ball tonight.

Miss Irene Miller sure was a looker, but she hadn't come with Alan tonight. Instead she'd gone off with some John Riley actor fellow. Doiby was sure she'd pick the Green Lantern over that overstuffed pretty face, but Alan insisted she couldn't know about that.

Doiby thought it odd, but he wasn't about to question his hero. Not on that point anyway. There were some things Alan was odd about, like the work required to drive a cab and whether or not to tell your lady friend about your heroing activities. Then there were some things he wasn't so odd about, like eating donuts with his coffee and reading the newspaper.

Still the Lantern could fly and walk through walls and read minds. He could do things Doiby couldn't even imagine. Only wood could stop him and wasn't that an odd thing. Doiby wondered if his newspaper counted for that. He also figured it was a good thing those walls he was always going through didn't have any plywood. Alan sure would be in a pickle knocked out in the middle of a wall.

Doiby supposed that's what he was for, to help the Lantern out in those situations. Who else was going to do it? Certainly not Miss Miller, however pretty she may be.

'Course, Alan couldn't take Doiby to the ball and he really didn't want to associate with a bunch of stuffed-up suits anyway. He'd be waiting outside for the Lantern, though, for when he was needed.
