Greatest Hits from today's Transfer Orientation group portfolio showing:
"These are from a project I did on vertical lines. I sort of, like, wanted to produce pictures with vertical lines in them."
"These are some pictures I've taken. They're not from any project. I just like them." Teacher: "Well they actually go together in a way." Student: "Well, yeah, I mean I took all of them."
It was actually fine. The professors all seem really good and I talked to one afterwards, Adita, who was incredibly nice. So far Tisch is the only place at NYU that I've found the people making themselves truly available, and mentioning things they can help you with, rather than waiting for you to find it out on your own after talking to thirty other people (this is true even at Gallatin). And it got me excited for classes. Although at one point the chair of the department said "You know, I'm sure a lot of you will be coming into the program thinking you want to graduate in three years, but we want to stress that you should take the time to really explore your work, give it the time it needs to grow."
Yeah, no thanks. I'm graduating in three years.
Overall the other students impressed me, so that was encouraging, since the kids I took classes with at Steinhart hardly knew their ass from their elbow, let alone their camera from...something else. And although nobody really seemed to be THINKING about their work (which Adita agreed with me on; she called my work very "cerebral," which was a strange thing to be told. I took it as a complement) very deeply (except for one girl, who photographed a surgeon, albeit her father, and a Make a Wish boy. Her pictures were very interesting), at least they had (mostly) moved past the kitschy, taking-pictures-of-your-feet stage. When I showed my work, mostly my stuff from last spring, I made it abundantly clear that I was not there to fuck around, that I knew what I was doing and didn't have time for people to do projects "about the sky," as Steinhart kids are wont to do. And, thankfully, everyone--faculty and students--understood it immediately.
And I made a facebook friend to boot!
